So why is it they say 20 mins of good schooling is like a good hour or more of hacking ? Is it the fact that you work them on the bit, lots of transitions, circles etc rather than straight lines and hills ?

Yes because it's harder work for them in the school and it's mainly in trot and canter.

It's odd as some people at my yard don't ever hack out just use the school every other day, there horses always come out sweated up, yet I can hack out for few hours an not a patch on him, isn't always schooling a bit boring though I would think for both horse & Rider.

Horses who spend a lifetime in the school are often sour. Variety of work is key to a happy horse, and you can school a horse out hacking. Transitions, leg yield, shoulder fore and halfpass can all be done hacking, as can flexion, traver, renver and rein back. All you need is bridleways, quiet lanes or fields.

I've compteted, backed, reschooled with an arena that's only usable for 10% of the year. People are far too hung up on arenas these days, you don't need four walls to train a horse.
