ok my loan pony who is an angel out hacking *touch wood most of the time* and is great fun to bomb around the fields with has a big dislike to schooling!

just wondering if anyone has any tips to make things a bit more fun and a bit more productive.

at the moment I only have access to a flat field to work in and he seems to get really excited and just try to gallop towards the gate and IGNORE everything I ask!

Im happy to do anything doesnt matter how basic it is!! so any tips would be greatly received! tack, back etc has all been checked so it really is between me and him!

just like to add last time we went to the proper school across the road he promptly led down with me on him! but I no longer have acess to the school!

thansk so much

Does he lunge???take him down and lunge him...make him realise it is work not play!!Do you have any poles???If not any branches that could make poles??Get him thinking about what is under his feet!!patience....i know it runs thin more often than not but he needs to learn that he is there to work....dont make a big deal of any naughtiness, just ride him threw it and he will soon realise that you are not going to take any nonsence, dont lose your temper, sit quietly and then tell him again what you want!It may take a while but if you perservere he will learn

he will lunge, but works better on one rein than the other, on the rein he dislikes he will keep turning in and trying to go the other way!

im prepared to do anything, so will try the poles, im presuming this is with me on him?

we are hacking out 2moro with friends, but can do some proper work on sunday with him,

thanks again

yes with you on him....as for him turning on you on the lunge that is a bad habit he has gotten into and got away with

,he will turn the other way as it is easy for him,he needs to build up on his bad rein(all horses have 1 side better than the other, but he needs to be made to work on the other, this will help him work evenly, have you the ability to stop him turning on you and doing what he wants on the lunge??If no,is there some1 that can??)Sounds like he is taking the p a bit,he needs to understand that you mean business

he is 5, 6 in November so I know he is still a baby, I just want to nip this in the bud before it gets worse.

Yup teeth were done 2 weeks ago and his back, saddle, tack etc has all been checked as he is in new stuff since the fire on our yard.

thanks again

Start with walk work only, until he accepts that you really mean it!
Small circles, figure eights, halts, left circle right bend, right circle left bend, round that plant, then round that one, long rein, shortened stride, lengthened stride, leg yield, round poles, over poles, and so on so he never knows what's coming next and has to pay attention to you. Then start adding trot transitions...
