Hello,

I have been looking at horse and hound forum for years and finally made an account!!

I need some advice for one of my ponies. Im having a few schooling issues with him. I have owned him for 6 years next month and have no history about him just he came from a dealer in very bad condition and scared! I believe he had just been sat in the field for most of his time or even driven due to the whip marks on his bum.

Anyway he would bolt etc and we found he had stomach ulcers. He has always been strong to ride and i struggled to control him even on the last ring of a dutch gag. Due to my other 2 horses being out of work over the winter i decided to really focus on his flatwork while i have alot of time. Anyway i got him down to just a snaffle and no flash etc. I had been just focusing on control in the trot before focusing on the canter.

Problem i am having is that i can't get him to supple or stretching. If i try and get him flexing he just gets strong. I have been working very hard with getting him to stretch but don't feel like hes coming from behind. I do LOADS of pole work and transitions etc. He gets lunged twice a week in an equi ami, hacked twice and schooled twice. He even struggles to go long and low on the lunge whatever you lunge him in!? With him being a forward going, but stressy pony ( currently on high mag equifeast) its hard to keep him going at a nice pace without running off while keeping my leg on to get that engine working. I can now put my leg on which isn't a problem its just it gets ever so messy!

If anyone has any exercises on getting him supple, stretching, working behind, not rushing in trot and canter that would be brill!!

He has back teeth etc checked regularly! We also having mounting issues which i have been working on since day 1 as he would just bolt but he wont stand still, he gets all tense and tries to push you off the mounting block alot at the minute.

I have tried loads of the usually exercises which work with my other horses but nothing works with him!!

If he's stressy it might be worth getting your vet to check his magnesium levels. Sometimes it is when the calcium is low and magnesium normal that you get. Stressy issues. By giving a magnesium supplement you can make them worse.

Is there anything he loves? Could you incorporate that into his schooling? My mare loves to jump and when she gets flat schooling I stick a jump up and will let her pop over it every time she does something right. She soon twigged that the quicker she does what she is asked the quicker she can do the fun stuff :)

Equifeast is completely different to normal calmers as adds in the calcium and then you adjust the magnesium! Hes loads better on it but can get quite stressy at times! Other calmers sent him crackers ahah!!

He loves jumping, but i have no control jumping him which is why i have gone back to just schooling to strength his back/hind and get him more under control! Might have to try letting him have a little jump at the end. Thankyou ;D

I would work on releasing the poll, so lots of true and counter flexion, especially while spiralling in and out on a circle. I would also work on keeping your rhythm slow and having the horse stepping behind. I would also teach a 'release' exercise so that if he gets tight you can do the exercise that he associates with relaxation to get it back. Good luck
