Firstly, hi everyone :)

It has taken me a very long time, however, I have decided that my horse and me are no longer very well suited and therefore I am looking for a new home for her. I have problems with painful joints (I'm only in my twenties!) and I guess I'm feeling a little more breakable than I once did and this coupled with my quite opinionated (but lovely!) mare, means I don't think we are the best combination anymore!

She is very special to me and the right home is EVERYTHING! I have explored the option of selling her very cheaply, as she is now (unridden since just before the bad weather), to the right home. A couple of weeks ago she was as good as sold to a wonderful home, however the sale fell through.

I am now looking at the option of her going to the right place for schooling and selling. She needs a lot of regular work- the more work she has the nicer she becomes- she is donkey-fied in the summer when she is exercised most days. I could do this myself, however I am limited to un-snowy weekends (floodlights not going up til next year), whereas she needs regular, daily schooling (leave her a week or so and all is forgotten!).

So, does anyone have any reccomendations for places like this in the Midlands, who would be committed to finding her a great home and an owner that suited her? They would need to be very skilled in dealing with horses like her- she needs a very confident rider, with which she will do anything. She can be incredibly challenging and is usually boss mare in the field and if she is not handled firmly and consistantly she can be quite dominant over humans.

If anyone has done this before could you give me an idea on the pricing? I guess a percentage of the sale price is taken?

Oops thats turned into a bit of an essay! Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Im really sorry to hear that yhou are looking for somewhere for your mare to go to be reschooled etc.... have you not thought about putting her up for part loan, so that she gets the required work she needs , so that when you come to ride her things are alittle easier....? There are people out there that do take on problem/dominating etc... horses. It seems such a shame to sell her when you clearly love her to pieces ! I took on an appaloosa mare on part loan who was a fruit loop and all that your mare is by the sounds of it but she had also been classed as dangerous. Her owner was in same situation as yourself, but to be quite frank, the owner was also scared of her... with firmness, excercise and routine the mare became tons better and the owner couldnt believe it and even started riding her again sometimes. Sadly after having her for 2yrs i have moved over 200miles away to wellingborough and the owner couldnt bare for her to come with me. So the mare has now gone back to sitting in a field day in and day out, its such a pity. i know she will become that boistrous/dominating,bored mare again... Loved that horse to bits i did ! Please think long and hard before you sell her, it would be so sad if she fell into the wrong hands but i totally understand your dilema.

try Tim Marsland - he is in Middleton, Tamworth and offers selling livery.
He is excellent and i had my lad backed by him earlier this year.

Thank-you for your post, Kimbers. I feel really awful about the whole thing but I do think it is for the best for both of us.

As for part loan, in my experience, people like youself who can (positively) work with dominant mares and want to part loan them are few and far between. But it is an option to look into, thank-you.

I sadly have not managed to achieve much at all with her, we just don't seem to click. I have ridden to a fairly decent level before and get good results with other people's 'difficult' horses, however with her I just don't! My other two (mares- both unrideable, one v.young, one old) are the sweetest most respectful horses- so I am hopeful it's the combination of me and her that doesn't work, not me and horses in general! I really, really do not want to be in this position in another two years time, like the person you loaned your horse from, with my horse being another 2 years older and having done very little still.

As for her falling into the wrong hands that is something that of course concerns me. However, I believe there are lots of people out there who take care of their horses very well like myself, along with the wrong homes. The right home and owner is my main factor when looking at schooling/sales livery and something I would have to look into (such as if I could meet the potential new owner??!!). I know that a business is being run and money needs to be made, it does concern me that this may, in some instances, be at the expense of the horse's home.

Thank-you for your post, it has made me think.

You could also try Rosie Bowie at The Meadows in Fleckney. Think she is having a baby so not sure how much she's doing at the moment but if she is still offering this service she is very good.
