hes working absolutly!! lovely in walk, trot and canter on circles couldnt ask for anything more...... working soft and round and into my hand. But as soon as he sees the long side hes like wooooooooooop and just opens up bounds down the long side in more of a medium/yay lets go canter........

Not overly sure what to do (the arena is 25x55 i think) ive tried turning down the long side ...... going straight then circling (then he slows down again) then going straight again. (if that makes sence) But to no avial. Not overly great as was planning on doing some novice dressage in the near future which could prove interesting on the give and retake the reins bit

oh and an after thought, what is the best way to begin to ask for collection ........ pole work??

I'd suggest incorporating downward transitions on the long side (and lots of transitions in his other school movements) so that he doesn't automatically assume that he will be allowed to continue to canter all the way down the side. This should help focus him on you and not on what he thinks might be fun!

We have one that has a big round canter and was using it against my son but we've worked away with lots of transitions, little bits of canter (say, half 20m circles) and also not "clutching" at the canter as soon as a problem might begin, instead half halting and letting the pony be responsible for its own balance.

Hope this is helpful.

downwards transitions..........DER!!....... of course...... so blatantly obvious! (typical.......you keep thinking and thinking of something more complex!)

thank you

have you tried doing 5 metre loops down the long side to slow him, pm me if your not sure what im on about and ii'll so a pic on paint to show you what i mean

It sounds like he is either losing balance or he isnt 'on your seat'. Do lots of transitions all around the school only using your seat to stop him. This means lots of hard work and YOU will also need to strengthen your core muscles. Agree with the person who said 5m loops, these are a great exercise to straighten and balance the canter.

oooh yup i know what 5m loops are

good idea.

oh trust me its not that he isnt balanced!! little bugger can canter prefect 10m cirlces etc.... its just him taking the wee-wee.

did the transitions down the long side today ..... noticed a tad bit of improvement so hopefully if i keep doing this over the schooling sessions for a while things should improve

Yes i can say he does not listen to my seat in canter at all! .... very good with trot to walk and walk to halt transitions ......... just his brain always flies out the window when canter comes into play. Any ideas on working with that?? The problem i find with him personally is that doing alot of trot canter ....... cantering for a short while then trotting again then cantering gets him more worked up and then he just starts to antisipate the canter/ just thinks we want canter every so often.
