Really numpty question but...how do you hold your schooling whip so when needed you can tap the horse behind your leg without losing any rein contact?

I must be holding it wrong as if I give a quick flick it lands on his bum rather than behind my leg which results in him bucking.

If I tap him behind my leg to back up a leg aid I find I have to move my hand and lose the contact I had.

Photos would be good please.

Thanks in advance

Not sure how to desribe it...

I hold it on the outside of the rein, and right up at the top of the whip (to make it as long as possible). The whip lies sort of across the, roughly, mid-point of my thigh I think. With hands in the right place, I can tap behind my leg or down her shoulder (she uses her shoulders as a battering ram :rolleyes:).

Hope that helps a bit!
