schooling

ok maybe a silly question but how important is schooling? i hack out and do unaffilliated jumping which so far is getting better and better my horse is only 6, its just that i am getting sick of fighting with him in the school he really hates being schooled he will listen wonderfully when i jump him and out hacking dont want to do dressage so am wondering if it is worth all the fighting

Schooling is very important your horse is only young so i wouldn't give up just yet. Your jumping might be getting better but there will come a point if you stop schooling where you don't have the control you need.
Do you have someone who can help you on the flat? That would probably help you feel like you were getting somewhere and not always fighting.

Can you not school out hacking? I've done it quite a lot with horses who are difficult in the school. Leg yeild, changes within the pace, transitions etc you can do even on the road and if theres a nice feild you can ride in you can even work on circles etc without it being 'schooling'

Schooling is one of the most important things for your horse when being ridden.

You can school when out hacking but is not the best as the horse has better concentration when in a school and is looking to be able to learn.

When out on a hack most horses switch off........

I.e canter and trot in the same places and do not need to listen to you as the rider.
