Thank god there was no one to take pictures lol.

It was great. Just what I'm looking for in an instructor. I was put on a lovely boy called Jason (fab name and he has two Jasons!!) who he said would look after me.

Well I had my position pulled apart and put back together and it would appear that I don't have an independent seat and am pretty out of balance. I knew this but have been yet to find someone to actually be able to show me how to correct it.

I think that is because I'm a novice rider (although I've been riding all my life, just badly) I've been riding novice horses and have had instructors who work on the horse but not me.

Well that's all going to change now. I spent most of the session in walk and halt and a little but of trot and by the end I could tell when I was wrong AND correct it and get a tune out of him, for a few strides at a time lol, then I'd loose balance and Jason would go into nanny mode and look after me.

So I'm really pleased and have booked another lesson for Saturday. More eBaying required until the end if this month at least!!!

Glad your lesson went so well, it's such an enlightening experience to ride a schoolmaster! I had a lesson at Talland a few years ago, in canter the horse kept changing behind because I wasn't keeping my weight into the inside seatbone. I never knew I did that as my horse just ignored it! I bought an advanced schoolmaster and he has completely changed my riding. It's often been very frustrating as unlike Jason, he doesn't nanny you if you get it wrong, he's just takes the mick and becomes a complete donkey! There's a good video on Horsehero of a fairly experienced rider having a lesson with Pammy Hutton on a schoolmaster and it really worth watching as it demonstrates how a good schoolmaster does what you ask rather than what you think you are asking for.

Yeah that's precisely it. His other schoolmaster shoots off if you get it wrong and he doesn't want new riders coming off lol. He was rely good, just went like a donkey if I got it wrong and went nicely when I got it right. Could fall in live with him (horse that us lol).

I'm aching now in my hips and I think it highlighted my wonkiness so need to see a Physio friend methinks.

Glad you had so much fun - my big horse does exactly what you ask - it was a revelation when I first got him, all sorts went horribly wrong, even a couple of months of being completely unable to go in a straight line (I sat wonky so he has his shoulders in the whole time - just as I was (inadvertantly!) asking him to do. I am now a totally different rider and very aware of what I do

My old boy must have been extremely forgiving to put up with all the fiddling and wobbling and just go nicely for me.

It's great. It feels like the start of a new journey. The only problem is that I currently share an ex racer who I think is teaching me bad habits. Or reinforcing the ones i already have lol!! Not sure whether to continue with him or not. He's lovely and I will carry on for a bit but if I had to pick I'd choose the schoolmaster lessons. So worth it and 3 miles away from my house!!!

That's the real joy of riding, it is a journey and you never really stop learning, pity i'm starting to run out of years!
