Hi all,

I have never suffered from any back problems until 6 weeks ago when I was doing lots off poo picking and picking up grass cuttings. I suddenly developed really bad sciatica that was incredibly painful. I went to doctors as not sure what it was and I have Naxproxen and co- D something. Both make me tired and I am fed up taking them but without them I have the nerve pain. Has anyone got any advice? Will it just go away eventually? thanks!

Don't want to be the bad news bear as everyone's will vary but I had sciatica kick in during January (not this year a few years back) and nothing helped it until I had an injection at the hospital in the June. I didn't ride from February to July, though my first ride back was competition and a win and in HH with a picture (horse was in a pro yard at the time and produced for me and I just sat on him for the one class)! Physio had no effect, I eventually ended up on some painkillers which made me like a zombie. I had to push and push for a hospital referral but once I got referred, they scanned it and treated it within 10 days. Good luck with yours - it seems to differ hugely as to what helps.

Definitely see a physio - they will be able to tell you if it just needs exercises or if you'll need medical treatment. Mine was cured by an operation to snip off the bit of disc that had bulged and was pressing on nerves.

Echo that - you need more than just pain relief. And co-dydromol is potentially addictive. If you have private health insurance it might be worth going for a full scan. The NHS won't pay for that until after a course of physio - but if there is a structural defect physio alone won't resolve that and just delays getting proper help. But if you are NHS dependent then a physio is probably all your GP will refer for. You might prefer to go privately just to be able to get a quicker appointment.

A lot of NHS areas now have a self referral to physio mechanism, they will assess and pass you on if necessary. Ours you have a phone chat and an appointment is made if they think you need it.

Another vote for a physio, and if you see one & it isn't helping after a couple of sessions then try a different physio because they don't all work the same.

Physio, osteo, chiro, yoga and pilates will all help to be honest and if one doesn't work, there will be something else to try. I get sciatica too and the thing which finally helped is understanding (through various avenues of help and exercise methods) the importance of muscle strength in the lumbar area is key to alleviating any pinching or trapping of the nerves there as they are particularly vulnerable.

Surgery is there if all else fails - hopefully not. Keep your core strong and use that, not your back, to lift heavy things. :)

I was really bad last year never suffered until then , can’t have co codamol as makes me sick , had naproxen and gabaoentin but still bad still had the pain plus leg cramps constantly all the time . Took about a good 4:5 months before could ride properly , ended up having tramadol from the doctors but could only take one , had weeks rest in the sun but still the pain was bad , x eventually did settle x
