Has anyone done it - scored a 10 for one of their moves in dressage? It did occur to me that it would seem dressage moves are really marked out of 9 'cos nobody I have spoken to has ever scored 10. The highest mark I have achieved in the the only 2 dressage comps I have been to is an 8.
Has anyone got a 10? if not what was your highest score and what was it for?
My 8 was for the last bit, working trot down the centre line, halt and salute. I think my smile (due to relief) got the 8!

Carl Hester scored a 10...

My old boss got a Ten in an advanced medium test on wish of sheepcote about three years ago.. she was relaxed, supple and it was a wonderful movement to watch..

I think you can only get a ten if the judge like your horses type to be honest...

People like Carl hestor get them all too often.. it is my oppinion that this is because of his name if i am honest..

Because of his name? Surely his riding made his name what it is, not the other way around...

nope, i think i've had a few nines over the years though. i think if i ever get a ten i'll frame it with neon lights!
i happen to know that Owen Moore got a 10 for his Novice test at Barbury, for the "show a few lengthened strides across the diagonal" movement...!

I got my first 8 a couple of weeks ago!

(Thankyou Hils!) I was most chuffed as normally our dressage test are always marked out of 5/6 at best!!

It was for our first centre line, for being "very straight", unfortunately it all went don hill from there, but it was stil a bl00dy good test for the heffalump!
I would die of shock if someone gave us a 10, then immediately book them an eye test/appointment with the local shrink!!

This week we were back to 6 being the top mark

Surely a proper 10 is unacheivable? By definintion it's so good it's perfect, and you can't get any better, ever. Which isn't really do-able.

obviously it was his riding that made his name. However, i said 'all too often' no that he should not get them. he does deserve them.. sometimes... other times he receives them and i dont think the movement performed deserved it!

As i said above, this is my oppinion.. I have watched him win classes where less well known horses and riders have lost to him, even though their tests were better, more relaxed, supple and consistant.

Rafi got a 10 for his final halt in an affiliated test at The college, has only done it once but he has had a few 9's

Excellent - thanks for replying as I really don't know of anyone who has ever scored a 10 (except for Carl Hestor!!). It gives me hope that it can be achieved!

10 is 'excellent' which isn't actually perfect!

had a 9 at affliated novice once for my first centre line in a long arena test - one thing my horse could do was straight centre lines! think i might faint if i saw a 10 on one of my sheets!

oh, and 10 means excellent, not perfect, so it should be achievable for those few excellent combinations out there.

No 10's yet but got three 9's in one test (think writer probably had sheet upside down!)

For a 10 I was always led to believe that you had to sleep with the judge, not sure it would help in my case though

I had a 9 once........ i was over the moon and back!!!

I dont think a ten should be unachievable, as there would be no point to having it.

My question is though..... how do judges train to know what is an excellent 10? if it is so rare, how will they know when they see it?

I gave my first 9 judging at pony club the other week.

The girl did the best centre line I have ever seen - would have been a 10, but pony wasn't quite forward enough.

I think I got a few 9's in a riding test once, but never a 10, but I will keep trying!

you got 8's in your first 2 dressage tests ??!!! well done i've only got one 8 in 2 years ! I have seen one score sheet with 3 tens . it was framed and on a wall !

I got a 10 in an unaffiliated prelim once for our free walk, it was my first competition and i was on the biggest clumsiest cart horse of a cob who bucked three times during the test!! still came 3rd though - must have been a very generous judge

I've had a 9 for the last turn down the centre line, halt and salute

I've just been looking at all my tests and there's definite improvement over the past few years. My first few averages seem to be 4 and 5's

Then it moves to 5s and 6s.

Currently more between 6-8 which is much better lol

Onward and upwards (maybe!)

I've had about 4 or 5 tens in unaffiliated dressage but I've had 3 tens at BE novice level... he was an awesome pony, just 14hh and he won 2 ONs, I would give anything to stretch him! To lookk at him tied up you wouldn't think it of him but he was very correct and the more work we did with him, so the expression developed! This was him in Necarne (no 10's but we sneaked in a few 9s
