I'd like to start my report with a huge thank you to kirkton for allowing us to hitch a lift with her and her lovely ponies as otherwise this is an event we would never have competed at, being far too far North for a wee trundly trailer. Hopalong seemed to enjoy her luxury lorry travelling, although thankfully deigned to return to her trailer to go the last wee stretch home last night!

Set off yesterday midday with kirkton and I enjoying a good blether (and whinge about so many flipping roadworks on the A9) and Mr FigJam snoozing his hangover off in the back. Arrived at Scotsburn 4pm ish and got the horses settled into their "stable" pens- luckily being early enough to nab a corner one for grumpy Hopalong (meaning only one horse on one side for her to grunmp at- sorry to Olivio's lovely boy, but at least it seemed confined to when I was around and she saw me = food!) and nab a few spare stables nearby for pals. We had quite a HHO section of the stabling going on with kirkton, Olivio and myself in an area of 4, then bogpony, Blimey and ABE just up from us. :)

Since Mr FigJam wasn't keen on chucking straw around, sent him off to fill water bucket for me... he came back having managed to empty some sort of oily/diesely stuff into her bucket which wouldn't rinse out?! There was me thinking it was an easy foolproof task?! ;) To be fair, the water was pretty well hidden! So had to use my two small buckets instead and Mr FigJam will be billed for a new giant TubTrug! :p

kirkton set off to walk intro and I waited to catch Olivio and we set off to walk PN. Neither of us are ever going to set any course walking records I don't think as we found far too many folk to belther to en route and also took some scenic routes via the novice fences to "eek" at the drop (it looks like you're jumping off the edge of the world!) and huge brush fences. Apologies to the poor novice rider who wasn't very convinced by our efforts to backtrack on the "eeeks" at the drop!

Course looked ok, fences I was worried about were the huge steps at no.6 (uphill as well) and ditch at the half coffin, it was very wide. Mr FigJam's tip when walking brush fence with 2 half moons cut into the brush was "just don't jump the middle"... well duh! :p There were plenty that seemed a decent height and the step, to step, to step into water at 16/17ab would require concentration, but wasn't feeling too awful about it. They had a really cute way of adjusting the water fences between classes- they were made to look like canal locks, and opened the same as lock gates would, so could be opened/closed easily depending on the class, very clever.

We did a 2nd "power walk" (which still managed to take us ages?!) walking proper lines and sticking to our own course this time. Then skipped around the SJ which didn't look too bad. A couple which looked decent size but on nice level ground.

Back to the stables/lorry to plait up and then get the BBQ fired up- yum! :) LOADS of food and talk of a giant cookie ensured folk came over to visit! ;) Complaint of the evening was wet socks/feet with not enough dry socks/footwear having been brought. Had a good night's sleep although woke up a couple of times to hear it pouring down and was desperately hoping it would dry up in time for the morning.

Luck on our side meant it was dry when we got up to feed ponies and start getting ready- my dressage time was 8.24am so no long lies, even being on site! The ground had really soaked up the overnight rain and was looking fine. Having been ribbed about my faffing/insistence on allowing too much extra time for everything, I relented to allowing Mr FigJam to pick up my number for me when we went down. I headed on to warm up (with more than one person helpfully pointing out my lack of number, nice to know others will look out for you at least!) with Mr FigJam to bring me my number. Heard no.53 being shouted on as next to go- still no sign of Mr FigJam and my number though!!

Starting panicking and trotted out of warm up, up hill to look for him. Still no sign, starting to really worry I'd not get my number in time. Eventually saw him, got numbers, back to warm up to be told next to go!!! So mega rushed, she had been going nicely first time around warming up, but my to-ing and fro-ing and panic had unsettled both of us and the relaxed, soft trot disappeared as we headed over to the arena. :( It should have been a good arena for us as away from the others with the least distractions.

However, as we turned to go down the centre line she broke into canter! Quick circle around as we hadn't actually entered yet, back to trot and in, but the whole test was horrid. :( Both of us as tense as each other (not good!), free walk on long rein the highlight with the rest feeling rushed, tense and yuck. Came out in tears and may have had a diva-esque strop at Mr FigJam with him being informed "next time, I don't care how much you take the p*ss, I'm doing things my way, in my time, not your's, it's my competition"! :o Slight overreaction, but I was so stressed about all the rushing to get number sorted etc.

Then discovered it was actually still before my scheduled dressage time. :( If I'd known, I would have waited and taken those precious extra minutes to warm up and calm down before going in to the arena. Lesson learnt- don't go in before your scheduled time unless 110% ready. Ended up with score of 44, felt worse than that tbh and we at least weren't very bottom, just mid bottom half according to Mr FigJam who looked at scoreboard. Got an 8 for our free walk, but the rest 5s/6s and a 5 for my riding. :( :(

A few photos to prove rubbishness!

Since it was a bit of a trek between DR/stables and then back down to SJ, I'd just taken my boots and breastplate down with me and mooched beside Olivio until SJ. Watched her go in and show us how it was done and then went away to warm up myself. Warmed up fine over the upright but had a couple horrid jumps over the spread (I never jump these well in the warm up!) including properly demolishing it once. :( Just me panicking and not getting the right pace into it. Jumped it nicely with a x-pole in front and left it at that.

Went in determined to ride positively and mostly managed it. She saw some short ones and I saw some longs ones, but came out clear. :D She really backed off the first part of the double at 4, was really gawking and spooking at something, but was determined not to let her drift out to the side or grind to a halt, so she got a kick, a growl and went! Had to kick on for the two strides in the middle but made it and she was much better over the second half of the course, just getting a little close to the last, but nice, agile and careful over it and it stayed up. So very pleased with a clear as I'd been a little worried about the SJ part of a PN.

XC chat to follow... too many words/pictures! :o

Then quickly up to the lorry at the stables to change over into XC gear. kirkton was around and helped us out and we then headed off to XC. Quick warm up and off as they were running to time, even though SJ had been running a little behind! She was very bouncy heading over to the start and very keen to go. :) Over the first (simple rails) fine and no.2 no problem;

ScotsburnPN24.jpg

Then onto no.3, the roll top with brush. Had decided to aim for the right hand half moon as the intro fence was on the right hand side, so figured it would act as a "wing" and mean less chance of a silly run out. All was going to plan until the last stride and she jinked to the left, meaning this was our jump;

ScotsburnPN29.jpg

Eeeek! Shouted to Mr FigJam on landing "what was that you said about not jumping the middle?!" and zoomed off to no.4! Killed a little too much momentum to 4a (palisade) so got a horrible jump over it and then dribble off the drop at 4b on not quite the angle I had planned. Kicked on and got a nice jump over the skinny brush at 5 then up the hill to no.6, the double of big steps that I was fairly worried about. Got her right back to a nice, bouncy canter and actually got a nice jump up. :) On to a simple roll top type thing at 7 and over the wall at 8, corner (that wasn't really very much of a corner, more an assymetrical box!) at 9 fine. Down the hill and over the ski jump at 10;

Then down a very steep hill trying to get reins back in order (managed just in time!) to no.11;

ScotsburnPN39.jpg

And round to the half coffin at 12. It was in the same line as no.11 had been, so you had to turn around 180deg on yourself off a hill, wasn't sure how much run up to give her- think I allowed too much time to boggle as we came towards it and she backed off and ground to a halt at 12a- hanging log. :( So annoyed with myself as I think if I'd been quicker and more on the ball I could have been more assertive and got her to go 1st time. :( Turned around, gave a smack and a growl and popped over ok 2nd time around and over the ditch (the part I was worried about!) at 12b no bother.

Up the hill to 13a (step up- smaller than the ones at 6 thankfully!) and 13b (house fence made to look like a stable block) no bother. Got a bit close to the big log pile at 14a but jumped over fine and took the rolltop at 14b on an angle no bother. Over the house at 15 and off the drop at 16 fine, then trotted off the first step at the water fine and dribbled off the step into water with a growl! ;) Cantered on through the water, spooked at the novice "lock jump" that was opened up to make a gateway for us and out over our "lock" at 18. Not quite her usual snappy front legs here for some reason, but it was probably the smallest fence on course and she couldn't see why she should bother?!;

Then over the barrels at 19;

And home to complete our first PN! :D :D :D

ScotsburnPN45.jpg

ScotsburnPN46.jpg

(and yes, I also spotted that the saddle cloth has slipped badly, will need to get some loops to put girth through or something to stop that happening again, poor girl! :( ) Also, there was a lot of concentration going on, so please don't laugh too much at my gurning faces! ;)

Ended up with 14.4 time pens to add to the 20 jumping and rubbish DR, so although 78.4 and right near the bottom of our section sounds/looks rubbish, I'm really pleased with the majority of it. DR can be improved when we're both more relaxed and it was a silly run out that just makes me more determined to not let happen again.

Cooled her off and left her debriefing with Olivio's boy in the stables to go and help kirkton out. Had a really lovely day and journey home quicker without big queues at the roadworks, so had her home and out in the field by 8.30pm. kirkton showed me how it's done with no faffing- we were packed up an off within an hour of her finishing XC! ;)

Lovely to meet all the HHO-ers and hope you all had a good day too. :) Oatridge training day in a couple week's time and then Hopetoun next comp... think I'll go for the PN...

Wow! For a first PN thats really impressive, and I love the XC photos! Shes absolutely gorgeous, with such an intelligent face.

FAB report and pics as always!!
Now don't be upsetting your personal paparazzi :p:D but yes agree that is the kind of thing that would send me into complete flap too ;)

Anyway maybe I have low standards but even on paper I don't think that is bad for a first run at a new level - I would be thrilled with that! Well done you and Heidi :)

I am debating Hopetoun - if I ever have a sound horse - my vet actually called him Hopalong on Friday :( but we have been invited to a wedding that day - decisions, decisions!

Fab report as normal with Fab pics :)

look at how much air shes still giving those fences - even over the last one :eek:

its a positive 1st run if you ask me - you've learnt something- be more aggressive (think the film Bring it on :p and keep chanting it in your head when going xc :D ) you've managed a clear SJ :cool: and the dressage will always be a :confused: but not a bad score if you call that your worst ;)

looks like a lovely event sadly its in my just too far away box ;)

Thanks all!

NJ- yes, it's a lovely course and the fences are all so nicely presented and pretty! :)

Lolo- thanks, she is a clever cookie! :)

DarkHorseB- I know, I was maybe being ever so slightly drama queen-esque about it, but it did get me in a proper flap and was absolutely not how anyone would want to warm up for a dressage test, but lesson learnt- do it your own way and to your own timings and don't go in early. (although I didn't know it was early as no watch.) Hope B is fine. Hopetoun is lovely... how close a friend/family member is the invite from?! :p

langside- thank you. Yes, like you say, plenty positives and nothing that can't (hopefully!) be improved on with a little work/more time. She was certainly jumping well yesterday! ;) :D

Eek very well done you - mega day! She's clearing everything by miles! You must be thrilled.

Wasn't it gorgeous weather for the PN - we had a great day. I managed not to meet any HHO'ers - doh! Felt like we were all over and done with and home before we knew it.

Fear not about your 20 pens - my older boy did exactly the same at that jump 2 years ago - it really does back them off and heading back away from home. Dunno about you but my lad had to really work hard up that second hill - felt v steep to walk too lol!

PS - I think Mr Figjam got off lightly - not sure I would have spoken to MrMuffin for weeks for the ahem "number issue"!!

Let's not go into that. 15-20mins before a dressage test is just FAR TOO LATE for me to be turning up with her number!
rolleyes.gif

To be honest I under-estimated how stressed Figjam was about this and she did super-good under the circumstances! :)

fab pics, love your horse's style, well done. i'd have been a bit narked about the dressage number debacle too, but at least you'll know in future that they CANNOT make you go before your designated time, so you can stand your ground!

well done and what an achievement! :D
will look out for you at hopetoun as i am dressage stewarding, so fingers crossed for a nicer test! but as the others and yourself have said take the positives! congrats again :)

Ok, OK... I must confess my part in "Number-gate".

I too gave Figjam stick about how early she was getting up, and like Mr Figjam stayed in bed a little longer ....obviously NOT together:eek:

And, poor Mr Figjam, was sent off with 3 passports (Hopalong and my two) and cash and my number bib and SJ boots and a bucket and a breastplate and his camera. The plan was that he would collect numbers and put mine in my bib (in the correct order) and meet Figjam at dr with hers. However, the plan fell apart when he collected the numbers and realised he had the passports, the cash, the boots, the breastplate, the camera BUT had left my number bib in the lorry 5 mins walk away up the hill.

So, he legged it back up to the lorry, but it was gone! I'd got changed and spotted it so put it on planning on getting the numbers down in the warm up. So he was looking for the bib, I was tacking up and poor Mrs Figjam was getting stressed. Totally understandable at first Pre Nov and missing number and missing Mr Figjam.

So, you see, it was actually MY fault and not Mr Figjam's.

Sorry - you were both great grooms. Next time Mr Figjam look after Mrs Figjam and not me as you have to got home with her!:p

Thats fantastic for your first PN! Dont know what your worried about :)

Are you heading to watch at Oatridge? If so might see you there.

Brilliant report and photos, and well done! I would have been very happy with a clear at pn, and xc looks great. Dressage will get better, especially when you have your numbers on in time!

I know i'm guilty of sometimes half way round daydreaming about how well horse is jumping, and then we have a problem! I must remember to concentrate and ride positively.

I could never expect my husband to go to get my numbers - he would get lost, meet someone he knows and chat forever, and he is the slowest walker ever!!! Never seems to understand why i would be stressed either.

We're doing our first pn at hutton - lovely course and have ridden the pn before on my old horse so looking forward to it. Thinking about hopetoun but if i remember right the pn has quite a substantial trakehner - is that right? And an open ditch? New horse can be a bit ditchy, although didn't seem to notice at auchinleck (was smallest ditch ever though!)

soupdragon- cheers, nice to know I'm not being completely unreasonable about wanting my numbers more than 10min before actually competing, you and kerilli agree!

This is the Hopetoun PN trakhener;
Hopetoun-18.jpg

The intro open ditch can be seen just in the bottom corner of the picture. It's not a really horrid one I don't think?

I think with the stop because I was already worried about the ditch, I was maybe not quite 100% thinking about the log in front. Silly mistake and a real shame to have jumping pens for me not being on the ball, but at least not a big issue as we got over 2nd time around.

WELL DONE!!

Fantastic report with cracking pics as usual!

Glad you had such a good run at your first PN. Here's to the next one ;)

xx

Congratulations both of you - sounds like you did brilliantly on your first PN.

One stop considering its your first PN is nothing to be ashamed of and you can go into the next one 100% confident that you're both capable of it! :D

Fab pictures as usual - I continue to be jealous of your lower leg position!!!

"Go Ponies, Go"!!! :D :D

Can we have more cookies cake soon???

Hopalong and you were awesome! And the photos are fab too as always!
I'd definitely go back, not just to lay some ghosts on the 'sack the numpty jockey' front, but i thoroughly enjoyed it all, the BBQ banter was fab and the course was without a doubt the best presented and thought out course i've jumped in a long time.
Loved the canal and the lock gates! :D :D
Well worth the journey don't you think!

Fantastic report as always. The seqence over the brush really made me laugh; I think it was H's way of saying that she likes bigger fences. And the second pic over the ski jump is brilliant - deffo one for the wall!

Well done, you are a big inspiration, and on for a double clear next time I recon.

Have to say, I have never seen anyone who always smiels when they are going round like you. You always look like you're really having a great time - even in the stressage :)

Sounds like a brilliant time! I don't blame you for getting stressed about the number thing. But congrats on the SJ and XC! I especially like the pic over no. 2 (the wall): her ears and your face are both so in tune and focused!
