Scottish Eventing camp

I'd be relatively interested in Brechin, Strathearn or Hexham but not Greenfields as I don't really like the course much I'm afraid :(

I'm only tentative though, as I only have 2 horses at home and last time something like this was being run I struggled to figure out how to leave one behind for a few days on her own with a non-horsey OH.

I can recommend a very good instructor if you are interested, she would probably do Brechin or Strathearn if available? BHSI, evented to 3* and now PSG dressage level. PM if you want details.

Not sure if my lorry will be ready by then, but will happily have lodgers if it is :).

I'd love to assuming pony is sound. Greenfields is about 20 mins from me. Not really a fan of Brechin, but like Strathearn, don't know Hexham. Nesta doesn't usually open Greenfields before April.

I've got lorry space for either ponies or a blow up bed.

Having run a lot of these things I would offer the following advice.

80% of people come because of the trainer - for St Gatherer you would fill it 10 times over but you would only get him one day. Better to get a good flat work person and do test riding on the first day then ask David to do SJ in morning and XC in afternoon on day 2. For flat work you should definitely pick a test at each level and let people ride the test, get help then have another go as this is good infront of a 'fresh' pair of eyes whereas a one off lesson can be hit or miss. Also you can get those not riding to video which is good to see back once the trainer/judge has pulled you apart!

Greenfields I would say is too basic XC, you need somewhere like Strathearn, Brechin, Auchlieshie to offer a decent challenge.

Defo need on site stables as no camp feel if off site. In March/April most yards like Strathearn prob don't have spare stables.

Re insurance, venues like Strathearn/Brechin etc have already in place as do all BE, EHOA trainers.

Brechin has the advantage of cheap stabling so quite a few could bring their 2nd horses too even if not on the camp lessons. It's easier to bring the 2nd horse than leave it with non horsey OH. Also hot showers, flush loos etc which Strathearn etc does not have.

Other trainer ideas, Les Smith, if up north Mary McFarlane is excellent for the flat, Caroline Powell if free will travel a long way,

Cost, somewhere like Brechin would be about £30 for 2 nights stable, £20 for use of XC and say another £20 for use of SJ and DR arena. David takes £23 per head for XC, plus for a group SJ prob £15 per head and ditto for test riding. So I guess with some good haggling you could get Brechin down to about £80 per horse including showers/loos plus £55 for trainers so about £135 - £150 all in for 2 nights and all the training.

Wise words smurf.

I agree that David would be a fab choice of trainer but worry that he's already likely to be fully booked, but definitely worth getting in touch and asking him if he has any availability/when that is. Les Smith is another good suggestion, but I'm guessing would be more £. :)

I'm sure people think I'm banging on about Brechin but picture the scene on sat night, the BBQ is on, the wine is flowing, music going all having a good laugh and letting our hair down. Would you rather be

a) In the field at Brechin within sight of your pony and out of ear shot of the Yard Owner

b) In a yard where all the lorries are parked in seperate places and we have to keep the noise down as the YO house is within 50 meters

I can do Hexham/Mistatiger if that's a go-er. Had a fab time there this summer when the EHOA camp was cancelled but we all went anyway :). It's just under 3hrs for me and I've been for the day before.

I'm afraid I probably wouldn't run it at Hexham as I live miles from there and thought it would be nice to run something in scotland - sorry to all who would prefer Hexham.

Will contact brechin as that is a good suggestion. Once I can find out some dates then I'll track down St David if I can.

:)

i'd be interested too :) brechin sounds the best bet so far as it has all the facilities etc :)

only prob i have is HRH wont be stabled so i'd need a small coral/field - but i can bring my own electric tape etc...

Me too count me in probably March time to get some intensive instruction in before the season starts and if was being really picky avoiding Greenfields as not much challenge on the XC course.

Lorry can sleep 4 so anyone welcome to crash that's if it gets back on the road after the frost attacked it!! LOL

Let us know when things get confirmed.

Great idea, be fab to have more like this in Scotland. Definitely interested if at Brechin / Strathearn. Drumclog is a long drive from me. What about Strathallan as an option too - especially as people are going to miss BE there this year.

I would be looking at a 'baby' group though, up to 2'6 / 2'9, would not want to be the only wimp and feel in the way of the big guns!

I would be "baby" group too as horse has never jumped before (although will have before the end of March!)

I put a post on this a while back on organising one at Strathearn at the end of March.

Have been talking to Sarah up there about dates, prices etc - if no one is no longer interested can you please let me know as I have put quite a lot of my time into this already. I do also have PM's from people who wanted to come.

Not being @rsey but I need to know if people have changed their minds. As it is messing both Strathearn and Me about.

Sorry, thought this was one and the same (ie HHO "get together" schooling).

I guess until there are firm details like "it's X on Y day(s) and costs Z" then people might keep their options open. If there is enough interest both camp and training days could still run (using different trainers anyway?) so no one's time is wasted. What details/dates have you gotten so far? Thanks for looking into it.

im still interested in doing the one at strathearn. Tried to PM you the other day to let you know but stoopid computer crashed - argh!!

Ooh this sounds great! Are Lurkers alllowed...?!

Agree with Smurf - Brechin is very well laid out for a weekend camp and the management are super accommodating and, I believe, offer lots of options for you to tailor a package.

Fab having the neds on site, and for those that don't like camping there is B&B very close by.

David Gatherer normally does training there in March so he could be an option. Also think Les Smith is fantastic and would be equally good. Before season starts sounds great.

Being from the Northern wilds, the further north it is, the better. Would love to hear from anyone organising something like this cheers.

This is all sounding really positive now, how fantastic to possibly have something like this to look forward to when we're all getting depressed living in the ice age! Tricksibell85 I didn't respond to yours as B doesn't have shoes and I've heard take off's/landings are a bit sharp on some of the fences at Strathearn although only 20mins up the road from me so would have been very handy! That's one of the reasons I'm pushing for Brechin!

running two on differrent dates or at different venues might suit one or the other. Brechin would be a LOOOOG drive for me. I am in Lanarkshire btw :)

Brechin would be 2hrs 30 mins maybe more with the trailer
Strathallen would be 1hr 30 mins
Strathearn would be 1 hr 40

so if one was say at brechin and one was closer I would go to the closer one as its less diesel and less driving :)

Nikki :D

Didn't see previous post Tricksibell - I'm a bit on/off with reading the forum, either glued to it or forget it for a couple of weeks! Would be interested in more details when you have them though, please.

I would be interested with south of scotland, unless me and ponio could catch a lift. :) How far are these places from Carlisle?
If I am not pointing I would be very interested, especially before Eden Valley (April 9/10th). Hexham would also be fine for me.
Whats the xc at Moffat like?

Ohhh this is a long thread. Scottish eventers getting itchy feet to be doing something. I rather fancy Hexham for 1 very simple reason......an indoor school & therefore the naughty northern weather cant completely ruin it. One 4 hour trip to Brechin (for the actual event) will do me this year.

So give me a nudge if anything gets firmly arranged as my HHO perusing is a bit intermittent atm.;):)

Hello

I apologise, I didn´t see your thread. I certainly don´t want to stand on anyones toes about this so if you are organising it that would be fab. I would love to go to Strathearn. I haven´t heard from them and I guess if I had they might have told me about you doing one. I have heard from Bechin who are happy to run something but maybe it would be better late April time so it doesn´t clash with yours?

Count me in for strathearn, will pm you my details
