I was wondering if anyone has any experiences of getting their mares graded?

My mare needs her passport changed, she is currently CHAPS registered but is no longer coloured! I would like her to have a Scottish Sport Horse passport. But she is only eligible for the basic passport that contains no record of her breeding. I would like her breeding to be recorded as she is from Clover Hill lines and I intend to breed off her in the future. But it looks like I would need to have her graded to get this as I don't think her stallion was an approved one.

I am aware that I need to register with the SSH society to do this but have very limited knowledge in how the whole process of grading works. Can anyone help me here?

My mare was mainly bay when I got her now she is fully grey, She was getting her vacs and microchiped yesterday and the vet recommended that I get her passport changed as on it it shows white markings that she does have anymore and her main colour is down as bay!

ok firstly Jackie is very helpful and will keep you right. Secondly you can't get another passport it is illegal for a horse to have more than one passport so what you would need to do id send the passport you have for your mare and have it overstamped with the scottish sports horse. you might need to get a new drawing done of her and have it sent to the origanl passport issuing bdy to get her update due to her colour change hope this helps

When I initially asked the vet about getting her passport changed he was unsure himself, then he phoned me back later with some advice (just general stuff) he did say that I would have to send the passport I currently have back to CHAPS and unregister.

Im just unsure on how to go about doing it as I dont want to be left with no passport! Hopefully SSH can help

Thanks for your replys :)

I thought that once a passport was issued you couldn't apply for a passport from anyone else, that was the whole reasoning behind passport legislation (apart from the disease POV of course) that no horse should have a second passport.
There's also the matter of the micro chip; it won't need doing again but would it be valid on a second passport?
There's nothing to stop you getting her passport overstamped with some other society but I think you will have to keep the one you already have to be legally correct.
CHAPS and SHBGB also do mare gradings so check those out too. The SHBGB ones won't be until next summer now if that makes a difference.

Had 2 Part Bred Arab palomino mares graded with SSH. They both got First Premiums and Ster Status. Also had a Part Bred Arab Coloured filly graded at foot with her dam who is one of the palomino mares and she got a First Premium too. She is now competing successfully BS. They all have Arab Horse Society passports and SSH overstamped them. I always found SSH to be very helpful and encouraging.
