As the title pretty much. I have agreed to scribe for a dressage judge at a small local show and was wondering if any of you lovely people can give me any handy hints and tips as I haven't done it before.
learn how to spell rhythm!!
Most judges are pretty cool and will direct you as to what they expect.
Have several good reliable pens and learn some of the abbreviations eg. STR =straight, C.L = centre line, draw a square for square; circle for circle!! it all helps.
Know the test you are writing for, judges do sometimes for get to give you a mark if you know the test it helps you know when to expect the comment and the mark!
Dont talk to the judge during the test unless its to ask for a movement mark, get the mark down then the comment, eg she may say 'needs more self carriage... 7' you will only be at the' needs'.. bit get the mark down then finish the comment.
Hope that helps . well done for having a go and enjoy!!
Have done it a few times--hopefully someone who does it often will comment
Every judge different so chat first, some give you mark first then comment others vice versa, if they have no comment you need to know or you end up writing in wrong place
Helps if you familiarise yourself with test/s beforehand and how they split into blocks for marking
Practice writing rhythm after 20 times it starts to get 'fuzzy'--well it does for me!!
Go to the loo before you get in the car....it may say you have a break but if they are running behind it will disappear.
Familarise yourself with the rules, if the event is self stewarded, so you can spot illegal tack, boots etc as they enter the arena.
Make sure you check the number and write for the correct entry - if they are not wearing numbers check with the rider as they go past - just in case they are coming in out of order.
my main piece of advice would be, forget someone is riding, you have to totally 100% zone in and focus on what the judge is saying, it gets to the point where thats all you can hear. if you cant remember the comment dont write anything judges can usually remember the test and will add in any forgotton bits you point out when they write in their comment at the end. if the judge moves on while youre still writing the most important thing is that you remember the mark so always make sure you write in the mark even if it means missing writing something.
most importantly write fast and you will come away having learnt a lot more than you think
Use shorthand. For "circle too big" draw a little circle and write "too big". For "halt not square" write "halt not" and draw a little square. For "could stretch down more" use "cd stretch down more". Much quicker and rider will understand fine.
