Scurf!

What to do about it! It's in my lads coat, is grey and flaky and especially bad around the withers and flanks. He is brushed everyday but when you look at the skin, it looks dry- he's lived out unrugged all winter and is currently malting. There's no itching or anything like that but he looks awful.
 
I've used micronised linseed for this on two horses now and it has worked great, from scurfy to smooth with glossy gorgeous non stick coat!

I still give one or two handfuls a day to the Welsh A who most recently had this problem but obviously have to watch the calories as spring arrives.

That and a nice moisturising bath on warm days :-)

I did think about that but was worried about weight gain coming into spring- did you have any problems with it? Or is it ok if you just give a small amount? It's like dandruff, really gross.
 
If your boy is still moulting I'd get scrubbing with a rubber curry comb every day in circular motions to get the hair loose, then I'd flick over any dust with a body brush and consider adding oil to his feed (I only need to feed 50ml once a day and it's made a massive difference!) then once the weather is warmer I'd give him a good bath :)

I do groom him everyday, not always with the curry comb though so I'll try that, but usually use either a body brush or I've got a stiff dandy brush that is great for flicking. Also use mitts and stuff to wipe him and wipe him with baby wipes every few days and coat shine on the others. Spent 2 hours with the shedding blade on Saturday and he looked great then the next day he was scurfy again! He has oil at the moment and had a bath on our one sunny day in march time/
 
I started the pony on 2 handfuls a day, one in each feed, she just has plain chaff and a few cubes to keep her busy. She has been on it for about 2 weeks and total change in her coat and skin, same when I put my haffy on it when I first got her. I have now reduced the pony's ration to the equivalent of about one handful a day, so just a sprinkling really to maintain (haffy has more as dropped a bit of weight). I will try to keep her on a tiny feed with it in as it is great for sweet itch and associated conditions, but if the sugars are a-raging I guess I will stop til colder months.

I think you can get smaller bags online instead of huge bags :-)
 
Give him a bath using Nizoral shampoo - its great for getting rid of scurf. Then to improve his skin feed Linseed - up to a cupful a day if feeding fresh - grind whole seeds in a coffee grinder. Linseed is great for the coat.
 
Thanks everyone- used a rubber curry comb, with the deep teeth, and that worked and I will try the Nizoroal and linseed- thanks for all the suggestions :)
