.... he's a horse. Am I wrong in thinking that Red Rum either won it or was at least nominated? I am convinced I have seen footage of him live on the set.

Red Rum appeared in 1977, the year of his 3rd national win. And in 1981 Bob Champion and Aldiniti won the team of the year award. Now correct me if I'm wrong but half of that partnership was a horse...STS should be ineligible for the main award as he is Irish but there is an overseas award...apart from Usain Bolt he would be the obvious choice for the winner of that imo...

It's pure speciism!

Not sure if that's even a word, but that's what it is

Then according to the wiki page jemima posted, couldn't he be considered with his team or jockey? If Nijinsky and Aldaniti were, no reason why he couldn't be, I'd have thought.

The 'team' should at least be the horse, his trainer, his lad and THEN the jockey!

Well, yes, but let's not split heirs, you know what I mean. I don't know what the criteria is, I'm just going by what the previous ones have been. Nijinsky had the team, Aldaniti was with Bob Champion, rather than everyone else, presumably because of the story that went with it.

Thats such a great clip, the way he stared and pricked his ears when the jockey on the video link spoke to him!!

I used to live near Rummy and the whole place was in uproar when I was little and he won the 3rd national. He was unique, no chaser will ever come close. Brave, long lived and a champion beyond compare.
