A non-horsey friend has just recommended sealskinz socks as the answer to my permanently cold feet. I love their gloves so I don't know why I didn't think of them for socks too!

Does anyone here use them for riding? They seem to have quite a few different styles and I am wondering how bulky some of the longer styles are under long boots. The liners look very thin but given how cold I get I am wondering whether to go for the full-on waterproof ones.

Any advice?

I don't know if I've seen the long ones but the normal length ones are not that thick, like they are super dense but I would say not much thicker than your average winter sock...

I understand the gloves, and I see that waterproof socks would be useful for example on a trek through the arctic or somewhere very wet, but I am not sure if socks need to be waterproof otherwise when you're wearing riding boots anyway?

I have used them for years. the short waterproof ones, they stop about an inch above my ankle bone. They are a bit bulky but I just go up half a size for my winter boots. Yes, they are very warm, and they also wick away sweat so your feet never get that damp clammy feeling you can get after cooling down when you have been doing something active like mucking out. I put a very thin pain of cotton socks on underneath them as well. I have to look after my feet as I have arthritis in them and if they get cold they become very painful. If it helps it is Ariat boots I wear with them. They are expensive for socks...but worth every penny x

That's really interesting, thanks councillor. I too get the clammy feeling which makes my feet even colder :( Have you tried the liners as well as the waterproof ones? I'm wondering whether the liners are really any better than ordinary good quality wool socks.

I think it's just that the waterproof ones are the higher warmth ones. I hope that my boots are not letting in water to start with but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to have another waterproof membrane between my feet and the world!
