At the beginning of December, on recomendation from my local tack shop, I bought a pair of Sealskinz Ultra Grip gloves. I'm a freelance groom and I wanted gloves that were tough, hard-wearing and warm and I was told that Sealskinz had all of these qualities, plus (as the wrapper proclaims!) they are waterproof. First time I wore them, I rode in them....my hands were FREEZING - not just cold, my fingers actually HURT! Not only that, my daughter's mare, who is very strong, kept pulling the reins straight through my fingers - the "ultra grip" was a joke! Over the next few weeks, my hands froze. The "waterproof" bit was a yet another joke - when my hands weren't cold, they were soaked, just from hosepipe splashes. Finally, after a month, holes wore through on the base of both thumbs - and these were gloves which cost me a whopping £28! I complained to the manufacturers and they told me to return them, which I did. In the meantime, I Googled Sealskinz and all I can say is that I wished I'd read the online reviews before parting with my £28! Since then, a woman at our yard has also bought a pair of Sealskinz and she moaned to my daughter that her hands were cold. ANYWAY.......yesterday, replacement gloves arrived and I wore them in the afternoon and purposely washed my hands (whilst wearing the glove) under a hosepipe and I have to admit that my hands remained dry. However, I wore them this morning and my hands were so cold that I ended up taking them off and working withiout gloves - my hands were actually warmer with no gloves on at all!!!!! SOOOOO.......come on.......what's your opinion of this supposedly amazing item? I'd love to hear!

I have the ultra grip gloves for yard jobs, ive never had any problems with them , hands always dry in them , but they are not great if the weather is very cold , as your hands get cold.
i also have the sealskinz riding gloves , they are fantastic , hands are always very warm in them , and we have temps of -17 , and i ride in them.
also have the sealskinz skip hat with pull down flaps for ears , im always lovely dry and warm in the hat.
all in all im very happy with my sealskinz products , and ive had them for 4 years now.

Hi, christi! Interesting what you say about the Ultra Grip gloves being cold, but the riding gloves keeping your hands warm. The woman at my yard, who complained to my daughter that her hands were cold, bought the riding gloves. What concerns me is their durabilty; surely holes shouldn't appear in the same place on both gloves after only a month! How much wear and tear are your Ultra Grips exposed to?

The Ultra Grips are rubbish at keeping your hands warm, especially when riding, you really need the riding gloves.
They are great for keeping your hands dry though.

I think you need to be careful with the fit tbh. If they are too tight they have the effect you are talking about. I have to have the extra small and the areas under preassure (base of thumbs and fingers) are not as water proof as they should be. The small are baggy and no good at all for me.

Really interesting! I tried on the medium size and the palm was really baggy, so I bought the small, which are a tiny bit on the tight side. Could this be the problem??????? However, reading the reviews on-line, most people were unimpressed with them (wish I'd read the reviews before purchase!). One reviewer gave them 0/10..................

I think the sizing is the problem, had some before and they let in wet and cold where they are a bit stretched, and when they are a bit tight they let water in when you hold wet things. They are fine for dredging hay out of the water bucjet (the old cob makes soup!) but let wet in if I roll up the wet hose pipe in them.

I have the riding gloves, which I use as yard gloves (think they're too bulky for riding.) My hands are lovely and warm and dry. To be honest I wouldn't have thought that the ultra grip had enough re-inforcement for riding. I have had the ultra grip before and find that the riding gloves are better for my purpose.

I wear liners under my sealskinz and hands stay toasty warm, they are 100% waterproof but the sizing is a bit off - the small were too tight and the medium are a bit big, the ends of the fingers are a bit flappy which is annoying.
