Searching for name of a book

No idea about the book but when I've read Basset Hound in the story description by the op,
well I pricked my ears !!!

If there is a Basset in the book, it's bound to be a great story ! :)

The 1* review on Amazon for the first book in the series picks up on this theme. And is hilarious!
 
Pretty sure there was a competition in Pony Magazine or Your Horse to be the cover models on all of these books and then they did a behind the scenes thing.
