Hi

My mare has been in season for 4 weeks, well I say that in 8 years she has never been mareish or shown any signs of being in season. This is why I am concerned she has (stuff) all down her legs every time I go and see her. I have not seen her squirting and her behaviour hasn't changed at all well behaved and she looks well. I have rang vet they said they can do a womb scan but I want to know if anyone else has had a mare in season longer than they should be? and in winter. We have a small 10.2 stallion on the yard but you wouldn't know he's a stallion he has never covered a mare and she pays no attention to him.

Any advice?

?uterine infection. My mare had it on three different ocassions. Bacterial infection and has had thrush!! Was seen by vet, treated by having washouts on three consequtive days £150 approx per visit and caslick stitch as well. Nfu paid up each time and no exclusions 0n renewal although there was more than 12 months between 1st and third infection.

hmmm did she show any other signs? Off food lost weight lethargic? Has she had foals? Or did she just have the stuff over her legs? Thanks

my mare was away being schooled. I think she was a bit irritable but trainable. Apparently hr womb is tilted and as she got fitter the problem developed s she was 'sucking air in' due to tilt of womb. She is still a maiden mare and I have been told that she will be able to get infoal when her competitive career is over.

She may have a haemorrhagic follicle (it just sticks to the ovary and gets bigger without ovulating.) This would be picked up on an u/s scan - and a shot of PG usually shifts it!

However, if it's just mucky legs - and no signs of 'showiung' in season, there are a couple of other possibilities including an infection in the uterus (probably unlikely if she hasn't been covered - or foaled) - or she may be pooling urine in the vagina (have had this in two mares after difficult foaling - ruddy things were squirting urine as they walked!)

My vet would start with an U/s scan of the ovaries, followed by an inspection of the vagina using a speculum - possibly followed by swabs - or a blood test to see if there were signs of infection/inflammation.

this is what we had done yesterday on a mare of mine who had been in season what seemed to be for ever with a gooey mess around her back end and very tender in the back ---vet found a large follicle
(4cm diameter) from scan on left side ovary she showed all these signs your mare as so may be worth scanning her

she had her injection and hopefully this will help her out though vet did say it may be possible she may need another one in 3 weeks just to help her out in case it happens again

we also had blood tests just in case and thankfully all was ok
