Seasonal asthma attack

Did a vet say your horse has asthma ? I am only asking as breathlessness can be caused by anaemia ,which is secondary to some other problem, diet ,worms , or ulcers ect it may be worth it to get your vet to take a blood sample . Hope this helps .

Yes unfortunately it was an asthma attack. Scope showed mucus present which tested clear for bacteria so is due to allergens. He has responded well to treatment thankfully 😅 just need to keep prepared next summer. He had full bloods and were clear also. Just think it was triggered by pollens/pollution or some allergen and happened on a sudden particularly hot muggy day when the air was particularly thick. Up until that point he was ridden daily but in the evenings.

But thank you for your comments I will keep an eye on the worm count and check for aenemia and any gastric ulcer symptoms in the future. X

A friends horse has been suffering. They didn’t actually say it was asthma, but he was really struggling to breath. He had a course of steroids and something else to put in his feed and he’s ok again.

Nosebalm from Gold Label,
It’s an African balm that may be applied sparingly into the nostrils of horses
to act as a natural aid to breathing for up to eight hours without any rebound congestion.
It may be used prior to any strenuous activity when an improvement in performance may be expected without any undesirable side effects.
With added menthol.

I have heard that there is a lot more asthma around this year than in previous years, and that is down to the hay. Apparently last year's hay was so dry it is very brittle and breaks down to dust very easily, causing a lot more seasonal asthma than in previous years.
My boy is also suffering, and on asthma meds and haylege is far better.

Hi EllenJay, can I ask which meds you are using? My horse has been really bad this summer even though our hay is soaked, I can ride about half of the days depending on weather but when warmer like this weekend I can't even ride in walk!
