Looking forward to 2017 and getting back on my mare after her winter holiday. But not looking forward her head shaking through the spring. It only started a couple of years ago and although oil seed rape flowers seem to effect her most. She seems very sensitive to grass pollen too. I tried a nose net last year but this didnt help. Is there anyone who can offer me some advice on supplement etc which may work for her. She just suddenly jerks her head, snatching the rein and seems genuinely upset. By mid summer we are ok.

I used cetirizine hydrochloride antihistamines last year from April to October. Turned a very miserable pony into a happy rideable one (used a nosenet as well but on its own nosenet wasn't enough). I'm going to have them in stock ready for March this year! I used 10mg per 50kgs body weight once a day and that was enough for him.

I had success last year with a hack up head shaking supplement. Worked really well on one horse but did nothing for the other one.
Will be using again for the cob.

The person who finds a real cure for severe head shaking will be my hero, sadly had to put down a horse last year as she was so distressed and nothing was working.

Are you sure it's definently the nose she is sensitive on? I would have thought it that the case the nose net should have helped to some degree. I would investigate whether it's actually the eyes that are the sensitive part and maybe ride in a full ride on face mask with and without the nose net to see if you can pin point it, like the equilibrium one.

I too lost mine to head shaking not allergy though and did it all year round after starting literally overnight one day. would love someone to find a proper cure.

I found this from the past might help you, I used the bordom page when freind's on box rest http://horse-care-and-advice.weebly.com/h.html

Years ago a friend had a chronic headshaker, fixed it completely by giving her Magnesium-OK tablets from the supermarket. These days it is much easier to get hold of magnesium supplements, might be worth a try.
