Does anyone have any ideas of what might cause my parent's dog to be so itchy?

It's only from end of August time to around November, and then sometimes in Spring time too (but this may be other factors, doesn't happen every year).

He's an old Yorkshire terrier, and this has happened the last couple of years but seems to be getting worse each year.

He's completely blind so doesn't do adventurous walks and nothing obvious has changed in his environment from before he started itching. Certainly nothing has changed inside the house, and there is no obvious pattern like the guy who cleans the carpets or whatever.

They tried him on a broken up tablet of an anti-histamine (can get the name and dose later) and that didn't help last year.

Their vets have been really busy but we're going next week so will ask them then, but I want to try find some ideas!

I've got a dog that has got increasingly itchy as she's got older and a friend has a dog that has always been fairly itchy but is worse between spring and autumn.

Both of them have had the same injection from the vets and it's been a game changer and neither of them itch anymore. One needs a top up of the injection every 3 months and the other seems to be going longer.

If your vets don't mention it when you see them let me know and I can look up the name of the injection.

Ah that's great thank you!

He seems to be opposite in that he only definitely itches going into Autumn. I wouldn't say the rest of the year that he is an 'itchy' dog.

I've never been to these vets with him, my parents usually go so hopefully I'll get to the bottom of it.

Try ' Non Stinky' from Stinky Stuff as a food supplement and avoid all grains, rice, potatoes, sugar beet and only allow few carbs in food and only natural treats. Use something like Nikwax Rugwash for washing bedding and rinse well.

It may take a while for grains etc. to leave the system, so don't expect immediate results, but the Non Stinky should help to calm things down. Products from Aromesse are also very good i.e. the bar soap and Dermacton products.

Grass mites? Really quite common apparently in dogs and cats between the months you say. They are in grass (maybe obviously ? sorry!) so they pick them up out walking in effected areas.
Too small usually to see but sometimes if you look in the little fold bits on the ears you may see tiny orange clusters.
Try a little spray of frontline or a similar spray and avoid grass for a couple of days after is possible to see if it makes any difference?
