I'd like to fertilise my paddock this year as it's taken a hammering during the last two winters and having now acquired a topper I am on a mission to try and improve the sward.

Does anyone have experience of using seaweed as a fertiliser? I don't want to use a chemical fertiliser and I've heard that you can use seaweed as a top dressing for pasture. If it is a good idea then I have to find out where to buy and how much I will need to cover 3 acres.

All advice gratefully received :-)

i tried to get some a few years ago for my place, bearing in mind i live near the coast too... was quoted an astronomical amount which put me off tbh, the farmer who was going to do it was really shocked by the price too. i hear it's fantastic for the ground, though!

I have used it in the past and it is good, but now a days I use triple 16 ie 16:16:16 [NPK] its actually potato fertilizer but it gives good amounts of P and K for root growth and all round health without too much nitrogen. we find it works well. available from most agri suppliers in 25kg bags. you need 12 for 3 acres.

The guy who did our fields a few years ago said, putting seaweed on your paddocks is like chopping up pound notes (it was a few years ago when pound notes were around) for all the good it does..! I have nothing to support this comment, however, nor do I have any scientific knowledge - it's up to you to do your research!
