I've heard seaweed is good for coat and skin? My veterans skin is really flakey at the moment and I wondered if anyone else had tried? Did it increase their energy levels ? My tb does not need anymore energy! Lol

Thanks

I feed kelp to my horses, 15g every couple of days. However, their diet is lacking in iodine and this has been confirmed by blood tests and feed analysis.

Have a read of this link. http://******.com/newsletters/20-seaweed-miracle-or-con.html

There are many things that are better to feed to improve the skin and coat. Livamol, Equijewel, sunflower seeds, Oil, Apple Cider Vinegar... But it depends on your horse's current diet, current condition and what trace minerals and vitamins may or may not be lacking in his diet.

You may find that his coat and skin are getting dry due to the weather. Maybe try hot oiling him and see if that helps? http://www.proequinegrooms.com/index.php/tips/grooming/post-clipping-tips-and-tricks/

Or maybe try a medicated shampoo?

I grab it off the beach and let him take what he wants. It gets devoured, so I'm guessing it contains something lovely which is lacking in "packet food".

I worry about heavy metals and other pollutants in seaweed (couldn't open naenae's link, so no idea what it was about). I also worry about the damage commercial harvesting does to the already beleaguered sea shore and sea bed. So I would agree with feeding linseed to improve coats. (I know it still a commercially grown crop, but at least the flowers provide pollen!)
