I have a Sec A which has only got three weeks left to foal, she has got a 1/4 shetland in her. Im not quiet sure what to do weight wise with her, at the moment she is in a bare paddock at the moment, its got grass, but very short and not green. Shes having adlib hay throughout the day and stuff, is this right thing to do? Or should i let her go on a bit more grass, shes only had laminitis once before, and it was spotted straight away and wasnt a bad case at all, just a bit footsey! She was my first pony, and this is my first homebred baby, (got a yearling, but obv didnt get him till her was 6 months) Shes happy enough, shes not ribbey, and shes got a nice round bum, but seeing shes not got long to go, shes not massive, like other mares ive seen, (So am wondering small baby) but shes quiet low, i know weather she is getting loads or food or not, baby is going to be okay, but just want to know what would be best for her??

Sorry its so long!! Just a little bit of advise needed :)

Ahh right, yer never thought of that [Durr] Just automaticaly put it on here, cause so many people come on!! LOL Thanks!! :D

Have you got any recent pictures of her that you could post? It is hard to offer an opinion on her weight without one.

As long as she has adlib hay and access to some grazing (ponies do amazingly well on a seemingly bare paddock) she should be ok, just keep a close eye on her. What does she have at night?

Perhaps you could ask someone to look her over, do you have any friends with any breeding experience? If not ask your vets opinion on her management.

You may find she needs more once she has foaled as she will be using a lot of her energy on feeding the little one.

Ive got a friend who breeds her mares every year, but there big mares think salles is 14.3 so its big in comparison to my weeney mare!! hehe!! Shes said she seems fine, but i just though of posting and asking as i just wanted a few more opinions, expesially some people who have bred from sec a's. Will have a look for a pic, and try posting it on for you, shes given hay all day and all night, its not brilliant hay as its for my ponies, - she ran with the stallion who belonged to a friend, but she kept comming into season, so after a couple of weeks, i decided to pull her away from him, cause it wasnt fair on him or her, but she never came back in, and weve been really unsure, untill this last month weather or not she realy is, but she is with the shape her belly has taken shape and how 'content' she is! So ive got hay which is brilliant for her and my shetland but not sure if it is brilliant for her in foal if that makes sence??

Talk to your vet ask their advice - get them out to check her. also they can give after birth advice - best people to ask ( no disrepect guys on here) but they are the best to ask if she is ok looking ok and also what to expect :) xx and happy birthing hun - it can be stressful but truelly amazing xxx

Personally I wouldn't venture into breeding if you paid me - tried it once about 3 years ago and never been back! :)

You might get some good advice - if you are brave enough. Take a thick skin with you though.

Im not into breeding, i just love my mare, and the foal isnt bred to be sold, its bred to be another bit of my abnormal family! Im not going to do it again, because i wouldnt be able to sell it, worse i think because of being sec a, ive seen them go in sale for £5 and it breaks my heart! i want to take them all home, but have to think realisticly yeah! This will be number 5 and im only 18!! If i dont stop now id dread to think what i would be like in 10 years time!! But im happy with my lot, and itll be nice to say thats my homebred colt/filly!! Im soo excited!! :) :)

As for thick skin, anybody needs it if they are posting on here!! LOL
