I've never seen such a wet field.. surface water everywhere and hardly a blade of grass in sight!! That said, the ground wasn't as bad as you'd expect it to be.. apart from in the dressage, where it was dreadfull!! but what does dressage matter anway?

Ernie was rather over excited about being out at the first event of the season on grass.. so there was ALOT of squeaking!!!!! and our canter more often than not turned into a rodeo!!
The test itself can only be described as interesting.. med. canter was just a serries of rodeo bucks.. we never got walk (gig jog sideways instead).. but for the first time ever, i think we managed a square halt at the end... i think the judge had a sense of humour, as i got a very funny "oh well, sh!t happens" look from her at the end...
Not sure, but i think we got a 44.something (could be wrong)

Onto the SJing... not a very tidy round.. but then with the amount of mud to contend with, and the fact tham i'm really ring rusty.. i was pleased with one down!

Onto the XC.. get down to the start with another serries of squeaks, only to be told that there was a hold on the course.. not exactly what Ernie wanted to hear.. anyway, about 15/20min later we were off... again, i was very ring rusty, as i've not managed to get out XC schooling this winter at all!! So we were setting out straight away at Int. level, not having schooled

i was a little nervous!!
I rode like a bit of a retard up till fence 6 where i got my act together (probably cos i was worried about that fence, a log drop to a skinny tripple brush).. on from there and i had a fab ride!! made the odd mistake, but nothing too bad...
Went clear, but had loads of time faults, (19 i think) but i didn't want to go that fast at the start of the season, and in that mud.. So i was very pleased

Not sure where we finished up.. no where i expect!
But i got a text from Santa saying she'd taken loads of pics of us.. so i can't wait to see them

Sounds wicked MDM, especially as the going must have been a worry!

I checked online last night to see if it had been cancelled and was surprised to see it hadn't

You must be dead chuffed, coming straight out an Int not having done any xc schooling, I'd be kacking myself

So big pats for Ernie and well done to you too

Well done! Sounds like you were both glad to be out. I always got runaway with in the sj at Aldon due to over-excitement from fresh horses! Glad to hear Aldon maintained their excellent record of running in rubbish weather. Santa takes excellent pics, can't wait to see them. Did Richard come to both days and is he shaping into a good eventing boyfriend?

Many congrats. Friend has been there all week grooming and said the place was like ploughed fields. All the more brilliant to have a clear xc and very good sj in those conditions. I'm hoping to be at Gatcombe for the bigger classes... maybe see you there...

You'd be most impressed.. the friend i went with on Friday had to buy some new reins, which she forgot to buy martingale stops for.. Rich was shown what they look like, and dispached off to go get some.. he not only got the right thing, but had noted that the reins were black, so got black stops... i'm most impressed
grin.gif
his comment was "today martingale stops, tomorrow horses" haha

well you rode a better round than half the other rounds I saw and there were run outs galore especially at that dew pond.

Me and Sarah decided on spur of moment last night to drive up as long as dry and it was dry enough so we came up. We literally arrived on course as they had the hold and lo and behold about 5 horses later you were on! Will upload pics now think i got a couple of nice ones of you. Camera starting disagreeing with me when went back to SJ ring so lots of overexposed ones of Mary King, and Vitoria P!!

Oh and james Robinson on Commanche what was he doing at that double of roll tops either side of the dip??! he just rode straight past the second roll top and onwards to get a nice big fat 'E'

Anyway will get on with sorting pics but well done as can't say I would have ever wanted to ride on that ground!!

Well done! Sounds like a nice first run. I walked the intermediate - how did that drop to skinny triple brush ride as that was the one I least liked the look of!!

I watched him do that as i was riding back.. he looked like he had his mind proper made up.. i truely thought i'd done the wrong thing in jumping it, and that the (b) part had been removed... plonker, bet he is kicking himself now!!!

Rode great!!
Hugged the right hand side of the log, and got deep to get a economical jump, then pushed on to the brush... end of last season i wouldn't have worried me at all, but i did make me think a bit today, esp. as i'd not been schooling.. i think it was a good thing tho, as i rode like a retard up till that point, then got my act together...
the step up to the corner at the end also rode well!! which i'd heard people were worried about

Cool, thank you! I thought the corner at the end was a nasty question so far on in the course, but actually looked ok as the step up wasn't enormous. I just wondered how the Intermediate stacked up to the CCI* last October - not a lot in it and made me see why people would say do an intermediate first. As my horse finds the XC too easy and I find the intermediate SJing too scary however, CCI* should suit us both by October I hope!
