Hi,
We have a 3 year old male greyhound who we've had for a year. We recently adopted a 4 year old female lurcher but I'm worried we've made a well intentioned but terrible mistake.
Our grey is very placid and slightly aloof. It's taken him many months but he really relaxed into being a pet and is a joy to have. We both work and felt that adding a second dog would give him some company as well as encourage his "play" side which has been lacking a bit.
The lurcher however is a lot of work. She's awful on a lead which means that taking them both out together is difficult and she barks and whines and is very dominant. She's growled and snapped at him a couple of times and even more so when one if us tries to give him a bit of attention. He's so gentle he just gets a bit spooked and leaves her but now he's taken up residence by the front door and won't shift which is a return to how he was when he first arrived.
We've tried to keep them separate at key times (eating, sleeping, etc) but the lurcher whines, scratches the door and has an accident which disrupts the grey anyway.
He's totally freaked out by her and I'm heartbroken thinking that we've ruined his life.
Will it get better?
