whats the minimum condition a saddle has to be in to sell it to a saddler

i mean its tree appears to be in one piece and its has all the rest but, it has bad stiching on the side and its all pritty worn and got a couple of nicks in the leather all over. i havnt tried to smarten it up yet but i will c what i can do.

i was given this saddle and it doesnt fit my horse and they dont want it back so it is mine to do with as i will. so i dont really want all that much money for it but i also dont want to be laughed out of the shop for taking it in. its a brown leather gp as far a i know but will look at it properly tomorrow for a make and type. only given it today

To be honest I doubt that a saddler would buy the saddle. It's an older style/older saddle with a fair amount of wear. I don't know how much you expect to achieve for it but I would suggest a pic and description on a local horse event place board to sell it as an ideal breaking/starter saddle. The girth leathers look in good condition. It actually looks like the old Penwood saddle I used for my horse back in the 80's.

If you are unsure take it to your saddler and ask would he mind confirming that the tree is sound and what he suggests you might advertise it for. Hope this helps :)

You may be best to sell on ebay, but by all means pop it to your local saddler and they will usually check the tree is fine etc for free and give you an idea of what you could poss get for it! however dont hold out much hope for much money as I sold a fairly decent one to my saddler for £25 and it didnt even need reflocking (they need to make some sort of money on it!)

These do sell on ebay as people buy them for breaking youngsters. They don't have to worry is the horse scrapes it or worse.
 
i dont expect much money for it as i didnt pay for it, it sort of fell into my ownership, in an honest but unconventional way. i just want to get rid of it with out any hassle, its either that or bin it.
 
ebay. or if your local tackshop has a second hand section, with cheapy saddles in it (mine does)
 
From what I can see, it's got a pigskin seat and pigskin printed flaps, girth straps seem sound and the web they are stitched onto where I can see it. It has gussets in the panel, hand sewn skirts (not machined like on massed produced saddles), in it's day it was a GOOD saddle,MOST of this would have been handmade so that's a bonus and a selling point with a bit of tlc and about £35's worth of work (re stitch top of panel where it has come undone, you can see it along the channel underneath, re stitch the flaps to the knee pads and a damn good feed with leather food, those marks will mostly vanish into oblivion if handled right, it's amazing what a Saddler can do with tired looking leather believe me, I have sold far worse than this and they don't look half bad when I sell them.
As long as the tree is sound and not twisted out it would be sellable but it would need the work done I have mentioned and anything else I can't see that is needing doing before anyone would probably want to buy it, hope this help, Oz :)
