I am being nosey today!

If there was a second hand tack shop in your area that sold good quality second hand tack, i.e rugs (without holes and tears), bridles, saddles and other equipment that was in good condition, would you buy from there?

I buy alot from online auction sites as it is generally cheaper, but I do also buy new. I would personally go to a second hand tack shop if I knew it was still in good condition as it would be cheaper than buying good brands from new.

Would you?

When I lived in the south. The was a place called 'Catlips' near Rickmansworth.
She sold new and second hand stuff, and you could part exchange stuff, brilliant idea.

Where I rode in SA someone started a small second hand tack shop also selling a few new bits. It started very small and was perfect for people who couldn't afford fancy new stuff and now it is a very popular. much larger shop doign extremely well. I think it is a brilliant idea

We have a fab little second-hand tack shop near us - i go there every now and then and have picked up some real bargains (got an almost-new Caldene tweed show jacket for £20 the other day!) Have also sold stuff to them as well. It's like a little Aladin's Cove. Takes a while to root through all the stuff, but they have some real finds!

I'd never not buy something just for being second-hand - as long as the price is right for the quality of the product, then there's no problem!!

I've been wracking my brains for the name of that place..I kept coming up with harelips.LOL!!!
I used to go there when I lived down South too. Alot of crap but alot of bargains too. You could take a pile of old stuff and she would price it and tell you how much you had to spend. She wouldn't give you money as such but you could take a credit note if you couldn't find anything that day..She had saddles piled up to the ceiling and occasionally you could walk away with a right old bargain. Loads of rugs too..great for spares..

We do have a 2nd hand section in our tack shop and yes, I do use it. Some things are no more expensive then EBay etc. Plus you can have a good look at them and don't pay packing and postage. Where saddles are concerned you can also try them or have them fitted for a small fee. I'd much rather buy used stuff this way.

Yes my local tack shop also has a second hand section (maybe the same one as yours Catherine). I have bought horse boots, rugs and clothing there. TBH some of it is a bit overpriced, but they are giving over a section of their shop to sell other people's stuff on sale or return, and people may buy from that section rather than the more expensive new stuff that would be more profitable for them, so I wouldn't expect to find a total bargain there.

They don't sell used hats, hardly surprisingly, but they do sell body protectors. I would also be reluctant to buy second hand riding boots. Some of them look well worn and could possibly pass on foot nasties

I buy my saddles second hand from my local tack shop, and have bought bridles and bits from her as well. All have been good quality, and good value for money. She part-exchanges saddles as well, which has also saved me money.

yep love buying from them...save me loads of cash - also go online at discount shops as they have good deals at times..
2nd hand is always good with bridles and saddles as the leather is a bit more worn in and softer...also can get really good quality stuff which would have cost a fortune brand new but is a bargin 2nd hand...
All my saddles are 2nd hand and most of my bridles...

My local tack shop sells second hand stuff and I've bought a fair few bargains from there, as a well as selling loads of stuff too.

We also have a horse rescue place near us that has donations of tack and rugs etc which they sell to raise money, its great you can get loads of bargains from there. I picked up a Pikeur GPA hat for a £5 from there last time

our local tack shop has a second hand section, mainly saddles and rugs but they do seel body protectors which i wouldn't want to risk buying second hand

pmsl!!!...have just realised I wrote..when I lived down south!! I live further south now than I did then.LOL.

One of my local tack shop sells second hand saddles, show jackets and a few pairs of boots.

Both the saddles for my horses were second hand, one was quite a cheapo one, as I couldnt afford anything else at the time, but it is in sound and working condition.

You can often pick up some great second hand bargins on ebay, although I have never had much luck finding second hand rugs on there when I want them, altough I Have sold a few myself on there that have hardly been used.

I live in Nottingham. Does anyone know if there are any second hand tack shops around this area as I've never come across them!!!!!

We have a local lady who runs two auctions a year selling stuff for a horsey charity. Have only been twice, but most interesting. Quite a lot of bits of equipment turn up that you haven't seen in years. Bought a lovely old dressage saddle for £30 which unfortunately didn't fit either of my two. Also got a homemade night rug (made from an old sleeping bag) for £4 which makes girlies coat shiny and goes in the washing machine, plus all manner of leather bits and pieces for a quid here and there. It's such fun!
