Feel I owe you guys an update after all the SJ help and run or not run advice!

With a very civilised departure of 11am and having actually been prepared the night before (bar learning the dressage which was still done the morning of...) I went for a swim, got ready and my friend and I toddled off to Swalcliffe BE.

I felt weird, I’d eaten breakfast (unheard of before an event) and felt remarkable relaxed. Odd. Got to Swalcliffe and the heavens opened with a huge hail storm, absolutely bleak! Never mind.

Dressage: Tacked up, studded up and went off to dressage warm up which was a deep and even worse sticky mess. No problem, found a bit that was pretty decent and warmed up my pony thinking I’ll keep hi, off the worst ground because I know he hates mud And the dressage arenas look fine. Wrong, went in and they were sticky and pretty cut up. Full of sympathy for my poor pony (who is a native Connemara, and was probably quite literally wenched out of a bog when he was sent over here- at least that’s what it looked like when he arrived. He proceeded to mince around the arena like a 30 year old arthritic pony. Oh well, I was relaxed, he was pretty relaxed and how could I give him a boot when he I KNOW he doesn’t like mud. Finished the test and felt ok. Wrong. The lovely Judge gets out of her car and very sweetly asks if I would jut get him checked by a vet as he looked so reserved behind. Mortified doesn’t even cover it, oh the shame to be THAT person. I explained he was a wet wipe in mud and she was very sweet. We got checked and passed by the vet (who also watched video of said dressage) and boggle exuberantly trotted up on nice ground. I was mortified though, as everyone on here will know I am hugely fussy/paranoid re soundness so even though I knew he was fine it left me feeling a little...embarrassed! To be fair, even though the judge queried soundness he was still on a 38 something and there were plenty in the mid forties our section.

Showjumping: Ate a sandwich (WTF! Why no nerves), hopped on fully expecting to withdraw as the showjumping warm up was similar to dressage though the SJ itself looked ok. Oh... how Strange. At the sight of the jumps Boggle magically turns from mud hating princess to floating across the ground with his little ears pricked so forward they were almost touching at the top. Sod. Jumped like a stag, felt good going in and again.. I was weirdly relaxed (usually at this point my legs are like jelly and I’m in near tears). So relaxed in fact that I get completely lost and go for a hack, doing some circles whilst I’m at it and racking up plenty of penalties though he didn’t touch a pole. Oh well!

Cross country: Again, strangely no issues with the muddy warm up there. Next time I will give him that boot! Rockets out the startbox and I’m grinning the whole way around. Merrily following the bend and realise I was on the 90 track,I handbrake turn my poor honest Horse into a jump where he had half a stride to clock it. Had I put my leg on he would have gone but bless the poor animal, he’s so good and so honest but even he isn’t a mind reader. Shit, 20 penalties, his first ever XC fault and it’s totally my fault. Re present then balloon over the ditch afterwards (kinda felt like Bog was giving me a ticking off), resulting in lots of swear words from me and me and the fence Judge having a good giggle. Rockets around the rest of the course and finishes with a big grin and not a drop of sweat on his neck.

So we came... second to last! BUT, for the first time in a long time (since calmsden 2016 with basil actually) I was not beaten by my nerves, in fact I was so bloody relaxed I totally lacked concentration and was too busy marvelling at how well it was all going jumping wise. This SJ video is far from perfect, I get left behind a fair bit and obviously I still have a lot of work to do with my riding but this is a MILLION times better than how I would usually ride at a competition, which is quite frankly appalling. Hopefully be positive will testify that this video is a big improvement ;)

I think Boggles rider will have her work cut out for her with the BE100 next week, he feels fantastic but is a little cocky and I think may get caught out with much technicality, but we will go and fully expect to retire if anything goes drastically wrong.

Video here, advice and critique always appreciated. And a little photo because he is just adorable!

Great photos! Love his zest in the sj, the 1st part of the double was at least 60cm too low for him! 😂
Chalk it up, you have had a very odd day, but a good result from Boggle!
(You sure you didnt get hammered last night?) 🤔😉

Swear I was in bed and asleep by 9pm!!! 😂😂 that would have been a much more reasonable excuse...

Yes the SJ took me a little by surprise hence poor pony getting a bit of a pull in the mouth where I get left behind but.. will Work on that next :)

Boing! Fantastic. Glad it all turned out well. That mud certainly doesn’t seem to be an issue for jumping but I can imagine it was mortifying to have to present to the vet.

Funny about the nerves, sounds like now you need a tiny dose of them to give you an edge haha. I’ve also been strangely afflicted by no nerves in my last 3 outings, although only today’s was a competion, but usually any food tastes like ash. No idea why but I really hope it lasts cos I quite like this non queasy feeling.

Oh my, you guys look fantastic in that showjumping! He's a proper little showman isn't he - just trying to show everyone else there that he should really be doing the be100 class.

Congrats on your new found nerves of steel 😁

Exactly! I mean don’t get me wrong, I was relaxed but still not reflected in my riding... but I am enjoying this new feeling of.. non doom. How was your comp!? Hope you didn’t get the hail!

He is fab but I’m still a step behind him, defo no chipping in today! It was really nice to be able to actually think about attempting to ride (though clearly not where I was going) rather than just sitting and hoping for the best.

The only thing I did feel which was a bit disappointed was caution XC, not nerves so much but I was definitely aware of my ankle and not wanting to fall off, especially when he was taking flyers. Oh well!

no critique from me, you both look great, well done and still love your little horse....

Thank you! I do too 😁

Well yes he's a posh Bog now.......doesn't like being reminded of his misspent bogdwelling youth 😂😂😂 Also I suspect someone's shown him a mirror and he's decided he is clearly a vertically challenged TB 😁😁😁
Vertically challenged TB oh lol! He thinks he’s big- bless!

And straight, and balanced around the corners (even round the corner where he was disunited 😉)
How is the ankle now?

Yes! Much improved.

Ankle is ok thank you, I was just overly aware of it on the xc when Boggle was bounding into things, more of a mental thing not pain.

Skiing in ten days so guess that will be a good test ;)

What a great result and a great performance and I can't believe you were 2nd to last with that performance in such testing conditions. There must have been plenty of eliminations? At Stafford there were loose horses all over the place before they abandoned!

Love Boggle, such a dude. x

Haha, yes he is very bound-y!
Skiing, cripes, you're a braver woman than me. Glad it has healed well anyway (selfishly because I love reading boggle reports 😁)

Hehe I did ski seasons so my skiing is a lot more competent than my riding. Plan on just enjoying late season sun and pottering around on piste, More of a ski to lunch type trip!

I am of course now overly keen to do a 90 next time but need to remember this is the first time I’ve managed to sj without feeling a sense of doom so.. steady up!

Ahhh I

Ahhh out of those that completed! Plenty of eliminations.

Thank you, he’s a really great little horse. Xx

Lovely horse. Shoot the jockey!

Michen, honestly, error of course on the show jumping, where was your brain 😂😂😂 ? (As an eventer who was more scared by the coloured poles than the fixed fences, I know the answer to that!)

Seriously though, big well done for going and for not letting the vet referral upset you and for completing when plenty didn't. And good luck to Boggle for next weekend's big challenge.

I looked at the results and wondered how you managed to get the sj penalties, going for a hack in the middle of the round was an interesting way to do things!! the round apart from that looked to be really positive, more controlled than it used to be, he was being ridden with purpose but not rushed even if he did think he needed to give them a lot of air it didn't seem to affect your riding, a few more outings and your brain will become engaged and hopefully your nerves will remain under control and you realise you are more than capable of doing Boggle justice, he is an absolute credit to you.

Your ankle will get stronger, just try to come back in one piece from skiing so you can continue to enjoy the season.

I just don’t know... it amazes me that my job relies on me being sharp as a knife and focused, yet in day to day life I am a so ditzy. What’s even more shameful is I had mentioned the turn to no 3 several times to my friend as it was quite a sharp turn for eventing SJ. Similarly on the xc I said I must remember to go right and not follow the muddied track around to the left. My subconscious obviously felt it was better to miss it out altogether!!

Thank you, will update on here, very much expecting it to be a schooling experience for him but think it will do him some good to be challenged a little!

I thought afterwards I know you will have seen it on BDWP and oh the shame, almost considered texting you to tell you it was not because the round was a catastrophic car crash. Then to follow it up with a 20 on the xc with the machine that is Bog... thought best wait to show you a full report!

Thank you- eyeing up Millfield for mid May :)

Nowt wrong with that! Well done the pictures are really lovely.

I have Arabs they don't do wet ground one of mine will literally refuse to canter if he thinks it's too muddy and will do the most awful choppy trot.

Good day out despite the weather sounds like a good first trip out of the season you will come out sharper next time .
Very impressed with the eating I never cracked that .

Ha! Ridiculous eh. I’m not sure how Boggle could magically cope when there was jumping involved though, it felt like he forgot....

Will not be so sympathetic to him next time!
