Hi All

I have just bought my 4yo daughter her first pony - ahhhhhh

He is a gorgeous Section A gelding 2.5 years old called Heniarth Bedazzle (Basil).

Question - (as I have only ever had to deal with horses...) What type of work can I expect him to do this winter? I was thinking of very gently breaking him - long reigning, bitting, felt pad on back, lungeing - sitting daughter on board and walking around. What do you think? She is only 4 so no weight for his young joints. Oh and of course she will want to groom him to within an inch of his life. Picture below for your thoughts.

I have to say that I think that this is too young to be breaking and lunging - especially if you are hoping for a four year old to be sitting on him. I would use this winter to concentrate on handling - make sure his manners are good for leading/grooming etc. Teach him to lead well in hand, have his feet handled, to respect your space - move away from/towards you when asked etc. Get him used to the farrier. I would leave it until next year to actually break him and I would certainly make sure he is well established at the ridden stage before a young child rides him.

He is very, very sweet!!! :)
 
2.5 - I would get his ground work done, bit of long reining, bitted etc but no lunge work or riding for at least a year.

I wouldn't do too much work with him over the winter. He is only 2/3 years old so still young and looks VERY bum high but it could be because of the way he's standing so I would wait until he levels out and matures before thinking of breaking him in.

I would definitely start with the long reining and leading in hand, manners, getting him used to traffic etc. but I would be worried lunging him as you don't want to damage his joints on tight circles and like I said above, wouldn't be thinking of breaking him in just yet.

He looks a lovely chap though :D
