What weight can a Section A pony carry? I know it's more than people think coz they're strong little things, but I can't seem to get an answer from anyone!! Does anyone here know? My mare is 11.1hh.
It would depend on bone like Katy has said .... Tommy our little section A is 11.3/12hh , I have sat on him but wouldnt do anything with him apart from walk up the lane about 50 yrds ... Im about 9st and I know Im too heavy for him .
Measure the pony's bone - circumference of front leg just below the knee (sorry if you already know this!).
The pony's height is irrelevant; what matters is how much bone she has.
As a rule-of-thumb, a horse/pony with 8 inches of bone can carry up to a maximum of 13 stone (including saddle, rider's heavy clothing, boots, etc.). I wouldn't put more than 10 stone max (including saddle, etc.) on a horse/pony with 7 inches of bone.
Your pony may well have much less bone than this - although some native pony breeds are quite sturdy. I wouldn't ask your mare to carry more than 8 stone max, including saddle, etc. Less if she is a really fine type with lighter bone.
