My friends mum is giving away her unbroken 5yo section B. I have not seen it yet but its well handled, just unbroken but has been sat on.

He is apporximatly 12.3 and at the moment very fat. She is finding it hard to control his weight as he is not being worked and thinks he would be better with someone who can make the most of him.

So me and my friend are thinking of taking him on, breaking him, turning him away for a while. Then getting a small child to take him out and a about in the summer and selling him on. I dont want her to give it away as so many people would take on a free pony and you just dont know where it would end up.

My question is will we be too big for him? We are both around 5ft6 and under 9 stone. There are no children on our yard really suitable to break the pony so if we cant do it ourselves we wont take him on.

I have ridden (and been tanked off with) a 9.3hh shetland. I'm 5'5 - 5'6 and weigh about the same as you. It's not the weight particularly, it's the standard of rider. Some people ride heavy and can feel 2 stone heavier to a horse, some people ride lighter and can feel a stone lighter, if you get my drift.

a traditional B or the sticklike fashion statements of today???
a trad B should be able to carry about 10st

<font color="peru">Cudama's 12.2hh, 1/4 BRP, 1/4 sec B and 1/2 sec A. I'm 5'6 and weigh between 8st3 and 8st8 (depending how much I've been pigging out whoops!) and he carries me fine on the occasion he needs sorting out. When I was riding him 4/5 days a week I was 5'5 and weighed 7st8-8st.

The only real problem is my legs...even with my stirrups round my earholes the still shoot a foot past his belly!

I should think you'll be fine.
