Section Ds for dressage?

My friend has a lovely Sec D that has great natural rhythm and paces - our instructors all rave about her. She is a little tense and spooky but getting much better the more she does, however this may be typical of Sec D's?

She also has a great jump

they tend to be spooky about daft things, fine in heavy traffic, if I want a quiet life I take frank down the main road and he ignores all the spooky stuff if traffice is coming past, he has only once jumped in traffic (fiesta with 12ft plank out the sunroof with a carrier bag on top!)

Re canter, I think it can take some of them a while to get it, we played about with bitting for a long time with Frank and now his canter is ab fab and he has great self carriage in it, it is my fav pace of his and I could sit there forever. in fact sometimes it is too collected I have to make sure it stays 3 time.

Absolutely agree re canter Ester - Dom's is great now (got an 8 for give & retake rein in last test) but it took him a loooong time to learn to balance that huge neck & shoulder.

yup I think it takes them a while to learn how to hold themselves rather than you do it for them! and they are bloody heavy to hold up.

Watched some old vids recently and our canter was rather like charge of light brigade, motorbikieing etc

I have found it much better since getting the dressage saddle, it has meant I can sit and correct him much better and this has carried over into the GP saddle.

Deefa your pics are gorgeous, unfortunately my boy is a knees up old style kinda guy so he'd never go far in dressage but we have some fun, last time I took him out we worked in terribly because he's nervous with other horses coming towards him so our work in was basically riding a 10m circle in the corner while warmbloods powered around us looking impressive. We only won the class! The main problem i have with him, as ester says, once you've got them working forward and enthusiastically WALK goes completely out the window because they want to do everything at 100mph!!

Yes!!! They're absolutely brill! Love my D to bits!

LucyNsid your horse is lovely, what level stressage do you do coz he looks fab! Where were those pics taken? Sorry, I know Im nosey!

can Welshies do dressage???

er, hell yeah!

my old boy got to Medium and was 4th at the Area Festival Finals 2006 at Novice aged 20! he won 200 rosettes in the 5yrs i had him, numerous titles and championships - he was bloody amazing although he did have the typical crap Welsh walk.

in the pissing rain just knuckling on, qualifying for the AF Finals

my new little one has already qualified AF's, C&TR finals, many local unaff champs and the BD Novice Dressage to Music Winter Semi's on his 1st attempt. this one is consistently getting 8's and even 9's for his walk - it's amazing. in fact, i pretty much bought him for it. good walk=good canter and trot you can make. neither of my boys have huge welsh knee action and wouldn't make county show Welshies. check out this one's hindleg in canter though - he's gonna be amazing!

oh, and for fun he does this:

PS - i do own all these pics, just haven't scanned in the proper versions.

Hey star you've got two fabulous welshies there, looks a bit woooooaaaahhhh XC though, mine would be just the same if I had the bottle. Well done you, you're post has really inspired me, my boy could be good but Im thinking he's 19 now and maybe we've missed the boat, even though he's going better than ever, I will defo get him out over the winter now and see if we can get a rosette or two, thanks for giving me a kick up the bum!

OH's welshie - 14.1hh sec D Currently has over 270BD points

Why on earth not, Section D cobs can do so many disciplines, I have got a lovely 15 hand bay gelding and I hoping to do some dressage at Addington in the autumn....

Go for it Cobs are so versatile, good natured and easy to keep, can't recommend them enough...

good luck....

I was always told all horses can do dressage and every one should be judged fairly for its type ie big flashy warmblood can extend way more than a traditional cob type however this does not make the cobs extension any less.

Its not often judged like that though
