I think the time has come to get out the electric fencing!! :D Planning on putting mine up this weekend.. When do you guys put your lovely horses in a pen to restrict them?

A pen?? never unless there is a good reason for restricted space to limit movement, mine have as much space as possible in the summer so they move around, can get to stand in the shade if they choose, they are shut in a stable overnight all winter, come in for a few hours each day in the summer and when they are out I want them to have the freedom to run about and exercise as much as they want.

The ponies are more restricted but still not to something I would ever describe as a pen.

My two are already in smaller paddocks, and looking mighty fed up about it!! Saturday i will be out with my fencing to split my big field up, and just to rest it, as it looks like a battleground !!

As in pen i mean small paddock :) Their field is over 7 acres and only 5 horses in it so grass is a major issue for us in summer, they have plenty of room to run around in their area, must be the way us yorkshire people phrase things! :D .. should have worded it better sorry :)

Oh your on the ball this year! :D Our field has had grass in it all winter because my yard used to be a dairy farm so the grass is very lush (Which is also very annoying with good doers! :D) so trying to restrict them early this year.. Last year I left it until may which was a very bad idea!

Any day now!! Fencing put in place last weekend - the official closing of the gap I left will be done imminently.

I only finished strip grazing them on foggage yesterday, they got it all eaten down in the nick of time. The grass has shot up here in the last few days, especially in my top field which was grazed by sheep up to December, then rested.

Sectioning off for summer grazing will happen fairly soon.

I've done mine already as my good doer has got fatter over winter I'm sure. She can live on bloomin fresh air anf im dreading the spring grass..I've been soaking my overnight haynets for the past month. She hasn't had a rug near her in weeks and I'm working her as much as I have time for😯

I've been extending our paddocks a couple of feet per day so the horses have some new grass each day. I've done this throughout the winter. When I go to bring them in they are normally standing at their gates waiting for me. today they weren't there & were at the top of the field grazing. The grass I'd given them had been eaten & without a doubt they were feeding on new growth so it's certainly starting to come through.
