Secure non restrictive harness?

I’ve recently had a few escapes!
I think it’s now intentional! Dog leans back, bucks and squirms and is out of his harness.
He does then just trot alongside and I put it back on, he won’t run off or anything luckily.
My fear is it may happen with a car passing or something.
I never feel 100% with a collar either. They feel overly tight round his neck but then he still manages to pull out of them. He’s quite chunky with a relatively small head I suppose.
 
We use Eazi-dog harnesses for our Labs in vaying sizes and nobody has ever got out of one. I agree with you about collars. The brown one, particularly, likes to twist so that she can get out of hers, so she always has a lead on her harness. We used the same make of harness for the Rotts too, their ears aren't big enough to keep collar on.🤣

This is my terrier, whose ears should be big enough but are very pliable! 😂
It’s a very new thing but the fact he does it when we approach the hose pipe etc makes me suspicious he knows he can just do it!
 
My dog managed to free himself of his harness when he spotted a squirrel….It was suggested I try a “greyhound” collar…
It works extremely well…went to local greyhound kennels/boarding and bought one from them…..I am hopeless at describing…but it’s welfare friendly…
Have never had a problem since…he just cannot pull it off…
Edited to add he’s a Jack Russell, but not a miniature one…

Oh! A grey hound collar as I would think is really wide at the top of the neck?
I’ve not heard that before!
 
Collars don't work for my small one (even greyhound style), because she has such a small head. She has a truelove harness which never moves or twists on her, and she's done a variety of sports in it (flyball, agility, hoopers) in it without it seeming to cause any restriction. The grab handle is useful too 😂

I have tried to upload photo, as a complete numpty cannot manage it….so if you Google greyhound martingale collars you will find all makes, models, sizes…

I like slip leads, but then I was brought up when choke chains and Barbra Woodhouse were popular😊

I don't use them when I'm training a dog, but I like them on older dogs who know how to walk to heel. They are easy to put on and take off, especially in winter if I'm wearing gloves.

I don't think I'd use one on my Whippet, if she sees a cat or a squirrel she would throttle herself rather than listen react to the pressure from it. I use a fan-tail Whippet collar on her, she has never got out of it despite trying👿
 
Mr P said he needs a choke chain! A slip lead would do the job I suppose. He doesn’t walk to heel as such.he probably has no idea what heel means. He doesn’t know what sit means unless a treat is involved! Typical terrorist!
He does however naturally just trot alongside or slightly behind me, he certainly isn’t a puller so could easily try that as I have several anyway.
 
On a side note. His lovely collar broke and I bought a new one from The Pear Tannery which is gorgeous but even in his length a bit too chunky (hence getting the harness out)
The metal bits are just too big so any recommendations of a nice quality little collar with a small buckle and lead loop so he can have his tag back on would also be good please.
I’d like something special rather than webbing type.

He’s generally super good to walk anyway. He’d not do the pull/choke business
His neck/head dimensions much be slightly 😬 I feel but he doesn’t look weird on first glance!
 
That’s the problem with a slip lead for security though- you’d need to watch him like a hawk to make sure you tightened it before he backed out, unless you secure it super tight ie tighter than the collar he can slip. It does work we use it plenty but you’re not going to be viewing much scenery yourself.

Yes you’re right. Great for a puller but it would be constantly loose on him and I’m thinking when a car shoots round the corner or whatever.
He’d be fine off lead on the road if cars didn’t use them!! 😂
 
We have a Haqihana harness for Ivy (the '2H' version with the third belly strap) via https://eatplaylove.shop/collections/harnesses

We used to have one without the extra belly strap which she did back out of once. Apart from the one incident, if we had a situation we needed to be completely sure she wouldn't get loose or we thought she might try to back out of the harness we used a double clip end lead so we could have one end on the harness and the other on a martingale collar. I've never been brave enough to just try the martingale collar on it's own, nor the fishtail collar she had when she came to us.

I got one from Amazon for my lurcher as he was injured and it was important that he didn’t run before he was completely healed . It was £27 so reasonable
