Just hooked up the new trailer for the first time earlier today, and I realise how silly this sounds, but is there a way of pinning the jockey wheel in place? Obviously I've wound it right up to the top (so the wheel can't move, because it's flat against the side of the chassis) and then tightened the handle that holds the wheel shaft in place. My question is, what's to stop the handle from working loose (say on a really rough track) and the wheel dropping? There is a chain and a pin at the top of the wheel shaft, but I can't see what it's supposed to fit into.

I don't really have anyone to ask IRL or I would, because it would be much easier to point than trying to describe it!

If you do it tight enough the wheel won’t drop. At least in 20 years towing it never has. The pin going from the top to the main part. There is a little knobly bit on each section that you line up and put the pin through. I can take a pic when I go to the yard.

Be careful not too lift too high. If you fix it on the inner bit of the wheel where it is narrower it can get stuck. So make sure to keep it on the larger outer bit.

Thanks - that's reassuring. The jockey wheel on mine sits on the left hand side of the chassis (when looking towards the car tow ball) so I've got it raised, then the wheel tucked in flat against the chassis and clamped in that position. Getting it down the lane to the yard ought to give me a definitive answer to the question I suppose, it's more cratered than the moon.

It looks just like this - https://www.facebook.com/urohorsetrailersyork/photos/a.870051619728542/3988405887893084/ - if you squint at that photo you can see a pin and chain at the top of the jockey wheel shaft, but it's not terribly clear to me what that pin is supposed to fit through, and why....

Not sure what picture. If it helps I have driven off with jockey wheel down a couple of times. It hasn’t trashed the trailer but you can hear and feel it. So even if it does come down you will know about it quick.

That picture you posted is what I was trying to explain and is the same as my picture ?

Thanks! Yes I'm not doing very well at explaining am I....thanks again for replying, and I feel much happier now knowing that a) it's very unlikely to drop, and b) I will know about it if it does.
