Quick question for those of you who go out hacking and park up in random layby's etc, how do you secure your trailers whilst your out and about? do you take your wheel clamp along with you?

Lock it on the hitch and take the wheel lock too. Also don't leave anything in the trailer at all except a haynet. Everything else goes in the vehicle.

I couldn't believe it the other week, on the lane to our yard, someone had parked up on a wide grass verge in their discovery with a beautiful brand new Ifor 511, not a wheel clamp in site, im not sure I would have been quite so trusting.

haha, no it doesn't matter! Clamp on nuts is all you need.
We did have issue on one trailer that it seemed to fit better in one direction than the other which was fun.

LOL - Thank you, I feel a bit daft now, but at least I know it doesn't matter as long as it will clamp on to the nuts, and it can go either way!!! :D

Eeek I have never secured mine! Take it to the beach and the woods and all sorts with nothing on haha! Never even given it a thought. I think I must have turned into a complete country bumpkin

You have been very lucky, or you must visit places not frequented by less flavoursome of society like the types we have around by me, or I am just incredibly cynical and distrusting.

We are in a very lovely remote area admittedly. When we go further afield we tend to take the lorry but I will definitely look into some kind of security for the future as embarrassingly it has just never occurred to me that someone could just unhitch and take off with our trailer... This thread has been very enlightening for me haha!!

You have been very fortunate, but yes I think taking something in future would be worth while.

Ester, I have one of these, can I ask you a really stupid question???? I seem to spend ages reversing, then pulling forwards a fraction to get the nuts in the right place at the bottom of the wheel, or does it actually not matter as long as you can get the clamp on the nuts???

Anyway you can get the nuts trapped is fine. I have one too and it's so much better than faffing about trying to put two parts together and them being reluctant to do it. And yes, I am talking exclusively about wheel locks 😇

People around me all leave ramps and doors down with a clamp on the hitch bit too.

Apparently leaving it open makes it harder to steal because by the time someone has shut it up someone will have walked past and noticed? Not sure I understand that but theft much more difficult due to being an island so ferry terminals notified straight away stops the risk of it being taken off the island and everyone knows everyone here so bound to find it.

I think you can't go straight up on an ifor though cos the mudflap gets in the way ;)

I can get my ifor up whenever I want!

Mine is only a year old but that style is no problem whatever you do with it. I did initially think it only went on one way but it does both now even if it didn't then.

Mine is a 506, and I really did think they would only go on one way, but thank you im so glad to hear they will fit any old how, and im not alone in initially thinking it wouldn't

So off to find some suitable lay by's and/or open car park spaces without barriers.

I thought that due to it seeming not to but then one time I had already unhitched and it could only go on one way due to the angle I'd left it at so I persevered and it did go on.

I have the bulldog and use it if I go to beach, country park rides etc, but I never use it at shows when Im back and forth to the trailer and theres others around, perhaps I should x

These look good, I have a little plastic ball that locks into the hitch at the moment when its parked up and obviously the clamp, but these do look like they would be a worthy investment, can it be fitted when your hitched up as well?

Yes I use both - I use the ball and the lock when the trailer is parked at home and then use the lock whenever I'm out and about with the trailer. Its fab.

I don't take my wheelclamp with me when I am at events simply because I always feel 'safer in numbers' but I would do if I parked on a layby. I have a really old trailer anyway although I know this isn't necessarily better than having a new trailer for lessening the risk of it being stolen, I understand its how easily its disposed of that is the factor in stealing a trailer or vehicle.

I used to turn the key on the towing hitch but don't even do this anymore.
