Evening all!

Just wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to fix up a security camera if you have no mains electric..? I was looking at Watchmyhorse but I think you need to have electricity to run one of their cameras. Has anyone managed to set something up just using a car battery or something along those lines..?

Thanks very much for any advice :)

A friend has some woodland that has what she calls 'scrote cams' they work when movement is detected and she likes to capture wildlife and local vandals on them

They don't work from mains or a car battery, I think each must have it's own power (I'm guessing standard batteries) and they have a memory card in them for the pics

Forgot to say above it's a series of pics rather than video - just remembered!

I asked the policeman about these when our barn was broken into. He said that the police can come out (free) to give advice on securing remote property and they can recommend various wildlife type cameras which are battery powered. Think he said they range from around £50 to £300 for a very 'clear' image one which takes more frequent pictures. I think he said that the more expensive ones can be viewed remotely by phone but that was all a bit hi-tech for me...

Hi guys,

Thanks very much for the ideas! WelshD - that was similar to something I found trawling the Internet last night so good to know I'm thinking along the right lines. Izzyella - great idea - hadn't though about asking the police :) And good to know I might be able to do something for under 100 quid - I was a bit  at some of the stuff I came across on line last night!

Will let you know what I decide to go with in case it's of interest to anyone in future - thank you again :)

Wow Honetpot - that looks really cool! I've been having a look round today as to where I could hide a camera & I don't know about everyone else but it's really hard to find somewhere  Needs to be in view of the gate (obviously!) & there are lots of trees there but now all the leaves are coming off I think it would be far too visible. I've spent the last few days tidying the place up but perhaps I should move some strategic piles of junk to within reach of the gate & bury the camera in there..? Hope no thieves are reading this :o

Thanks again for all your ideas - good to know I'm not the only person trying to sort this out. If only we didn't need to..!

It is possible to get remotely operated cameras and movement sensors. We have them on our yard and paddock. They send an alarm to our house. It is great for peace of mind but be aware that unless you are good at concealing them the local wildlife has great fun setting them off at ungodly hours especially in the summer when it gets light at 3am!!! Dear me I have cursed our swallows at times!!! Also one of our horses escaped from his paddock last summer and set off the sensor several times (this was also at 3am, don't you go off them?) We scrambled into our clothes convinced we had burglars to find Charlie looking as if butter wouldn't melt and clearly wondering how we knew what he'd done. This sort of thing doesn't happen that often but it is the downside of them. That said I am happier with them than without. We got ours from a Nottingham company. They weren't cheap but do carry the signal up to our house which is about half a mile from the yard. The sensors themselves work off of pp3 batteries that need replacing every 6 months.
