Im going to attempt to clip Jeds' feathers on Saturday and as it is soooo expensive to call the vet out to sedate him i was going to try sedalin.

Does it work? He fights things well so i thought about giving him double to reccomded amount for light seditation so he goes under a bit deeper. He is just under 600kgs if that makes a difference.

Mnay thanks in advance.

I use sedalin for my mare prior to clipping as she is a total nightmare. I give 4ml an hour before starting and BEFORE breakfast (as advised by vet) I then muck out around her whilst she munches on some hay.. I would speak to a vet before administering a higher dose.. good luck

My horse was in on box rest as he had, had his sarcoids lazered. He was a complete nightmare in the box and kicked huge holes in his stable. My 'friend' was looking after him for me whilst I was at work and she gave him some sedalin - in fact she gace him 2 whole tubes, but he was so wound up if made no difference.

Panicking that she had given him so much we called the vet out and he reassured us that it was fine and wouldn't kill him, shetlands can cope with a tube of it and it isn't life threatening. He did mention though that when he had calmed down he would sleep well. Anyway this horse was TB/WB 16.1hh, anyway when his mates came in from the field, not long after and he was snoring away!!

So I doubt it will have any bad effects but just make sure you give it to him when he is in a quiet environment and add to it rather than giving him the whole lot in one go.

Good luck!

I have accidentaly lost a tube of sedalin as the horse struggled and managed to bite off part of the plunger, which then depressed fully nad gave it about 4 times the amount I meant to! Rang vet who did say that it wouldn't kill horse, yes it might be VERY sedated but sedalin isn't to strong for that reason, in case people make mistakes and miscalculate. They suggested that I just crack on with the clipping rather than worry about ringing them (!) - it didn't seem to make any different and it was still a bu**er to do!

It says on the packet to give 1,5 dose for deeper sedation, so for your horse the light sedation would be 2.5 ml, you would give 3.75 ml for medium sedation, I give about 5 ml to get any effect whatsoever. It has to be given in one dose, not adding up a bit later as the latter will only lengthen the time he will be sedated for, not deepness of sedation.
If you give him a whole tube nothing in particular will happen, but it will be twice as expensive:)

If you haven't used Sedalin before with this particular horse, you won't really know how it will affect him. I know mine are affected differently. My 16h yearling is knocked out with just 2ml. Really dopey and hard to get her to even move for a few hours.

The woman next door has a 16h TB gelding and she says she's had to give him up to 6ml to have any real effect.

The vet says that the horse needs to be in a calm and relaxed state of mind when the drug is administered and until it takes effect, otherwise the adrenaline will over ride its effect.

Guess the tip is - HIDE THE CLIPPERS until he's well and truly relaxed and sedated

Spyda is right, the must have NO adrenaline in their systems for it to work. Its a preventative measure. I have got annoyed with people who slag off sedalin but the give when the horse is already wound up! Its sedation not general anestethic! I wouldn't even much out around a horse who's be sedalined. We even turn the radio off

Our babies got a tube and a half when they were first shod but they are percherons!

It all depends on the weight of the horse as to how much is given.

I gave my horse the whole tube (he is 750 kg) without much benefit. It took the edge of him, but it took several hours and he was kept calm and relaxed.

If I remember right, needs to be given preferably on empty stomach, whilst the horse is quiet and not stressed and if you give more than the recommended dose the sedation isnt deeper, just longer for them to come round...
My boys had it and not worked, and had it at recommeneded dose in quiet stable and no hay to delay absorbtion of the sedalin. just gave him it on a piece of orange!
Worked for box rest but not to clip!

IMHO you can definitely give a whole tube - BUT - it is important that you give the dose and then leave the horse in quietness - ie with a haynet or whatever, and no noise or business round him/her for at least 45 mins. If you muck out, play the radio etc it just stops them from feeling sleepy/sedated.

Doesn't last as long as intravenous sedation, but definitely works if you can have that quiet perid before, and then move quietly around them when you come in!

From someone who knows what it is like to clip a nervous horse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
