daughters mare is on restricted turnout and i have been using 2ml every morning to turn out and keep her calm as shes normally very silly and bucks etc and needs to be kept calm. the first week or so you could see she was drowsy and has been as good as gold. 3 weeks on it doesnt seem to make her sleepy at all and today she has been really on her toes. it is windy which she hates but i thought sedalin could be used fairly long term and would be as effective. im back to newmarket next week so hoping i wont need for much longer, but am interested to know..

We have used it long term for one of our horses, he didn't get used to it in any way, it always had the same effect each time he was given it, I believe that if they get worked up in anyway and adrenalin kicks in it can effect it, perhaps with her not liking the wind she just got worked up and made the Sedalin less effective?

Are you feeding it differently at all? The only time it didn't work with my pony was when I added it to a feed rather than using the oral syringe, for some reason even though he ate it, it didn't seem to have any effect. I had to go back to using the syringe and it was fine.

giving it the same way every day and always when shes calm. think it must have been the wind plus discovered shes in season...

Hi

I was given sedalin for a laminitic pony as the vet couldnt get near him. It made him off his head and the vet thought the pony knew what it was(ie taste? had it before). He was sleepier but this made him more unreasonable.

We never tried a calmer but it was recommended. Fortunately the laminitis via management we got it sorted out.

I think the pony had it before too.

If you give it to them when they are stressed it can make them worse. My vet said that an sedative injection is like sitting down and putting your feet up with a nice cup of tea and sedalin is like being drunk!! I have used it my mare and sometimes it works and on other days its almost seemed to make her worse.

I think it depends on the horse, we give it to horses at work which are just coming back into work and being racehorses they tend to be quite fresh! Some of them get very sleepy on it, others it doesn't touch. They can also "snap out of it". I had a Shetland x who was in desperate need of having his feet done, but was quite wild and no way was I going to let a scary farrier near him without him being sleepy. I gave him 2ml, which did nothing and we only got half of one foot done before we both gave up, 5ml, same as 2ml, so in the end I just gave him the whole tube. He was very, very sleepy when it had kicked in, but as soon as the farrier picked up a foot he was wide awake again and trying to boot the farrier. We did eventually get him done, but it took a long time and I don't think the sedalin helped that much.

mrs d123- she is on restricted turnout and controlled exercise, hence the sedalin. she has been on it 3 weeks with good effect but now doesnt seem to have the desired effect which is reason for the post.
