I absolutely agree with the FF post above. There should be recommendations on the packaging. However, if the vet is unavailable and the directions aren't on the tube aren't available.....for a 16.1, 550kg horse, a dose the size of a little fingernail. I'm only posting this as I've administered this many times, but please try your vet first!

Definitely second checking with your vet. Sedalin is very variable - all horses react differently and environmental stimulants etc can make a difference as well.

As an example if it helps, for the livery I’m helping at the moment (big 16.3 warm blood), we started (on vets advice) at 3ml post 6 weeks box rest and we’re down to 2ml now, stopping shortly as he’s back in a turnout routine now and much more relaxed.

Presumably you have obtained this prescription only medication from your vet ? They should have advised you on the dosage.
If you haven't got it from a vet , it's not very sensible to use it without their advice. These drugs are POM for a reason.

MY vet gave me two tubes of sedalin to administer as necessary to keep my younger horse more settled when I took my oldie to a show without stating any specific dose. It’s variable how well it works and the recommended dosage is on the tube.

It’s important you give it when the horse is settled and not anticipating anything unsettling. Give it about an hour before you need it, leave the horse undisturbed and top up if necessary. For my approx 650kg a whole tube just took the edge off but he still banged about abit. I started with a lower dose and then gave the rest when it didn’t really do anything.

Personally I don't really think this is a question that should be asked on forum, or even between owners/yard managers. Always seek the guidance of your vet when using POM meds.

Horses react so very differently and individually to the various types of sedation. I will never forget trying to help a young Ted through a firework display for a wedding reception at our neighbours. I was dreading it and the Parish Council had asked them not to use fireworks.

We knew he is sensitive to sedation so we were very conservative with the dosage with the top up option if needed. 20mg of acp knocked him out for hours, all 800kg of him. Administered to him at 5.30pm he was still away with the fairies at 10pm. At the very last minute the neighbours decided not to let the fireworks off which was a massive relief. I had masses of help that evening, drinks and snacks ready for my long suffering helpers and 7 horses sedated, I ended up on my own waiting for comatosed Ted to wake up for hours !

Again check with your Vet. I've always been told that as Sedalin dosage increases it means the effects last longer rather than having an increased level of sedation if that makes sense.

As others have said, ask your vet. I remember my vet advising that giving more doesn’t make them more sedated but just lasts longer.

Under vet supervision I had one of mine on Sedalin coming off box rest. He was out with a quiet companion but got a bad kick from the companion which took three months to come right. This was due to him being sedated and not getting out of the way quick enough.

Just to clarify, Sedalin was on prescription from vet for previous turnout after box rest. Will double check dosage as previous yard administered
