Sedalin Gel...Does it work?

I have got to clip my horse and he is a little jumpy so was thinking about getting some sedalin gel just to take the edge off him. How sleepy does it make them though, he would need to be able to pick up his legs for arm pits etc?

Also how much do you use?

Yes it does work! My friends 17hh warmblood is using it on box rest at the moment and he started on 2.5 mls and is now on 3.5 mls to prolong the effects. You can still lift legs etc. The dosage would depend on the size of horse. Ask your vet when you go to pick it up.

I have found it depends on the horse, just personal but I dont like using it for clipping though.

Like every other thing with horses it works for some and not for others. Only way to find out if it will work for yours is to try it and see.

I use it occasionally on the nervous pony when he needs the farrier, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. The times it doesnt is usually when he's incredibly stressed, i think the adrenalin takes over, but on the whole it does work and i give him 3ml at a time.

Do you have to buy it direct from a vet then? You couldnt get it from a tack shop?

I like it but I only use it when I am getting near the horses head as it can make them very sensitive. it is a prescription drug but if you look around you can order it from Sweden with no prescription….

Totally depends on the horse. Used it for my welsh when she needed teeth doing,worked a treat each time. Used it on my mad younger mare for clipping and even an overdose of it made no difference what so ever! Tried it on 2 seperate occasions and still no difference. This year for clipping we will have to get the vet to sedate as gave up trying last year.

Eeer, no! Its a drug, and a powerful one at that, and you can only get it from the vet.

Have you thought about twitching?

and dont forget, it cant be topped up

if you give 4mls and after 45 minutes it hasnt worked, you cant give anymore as it wont have a deepening effect....

you'd have to wait til nerxt day to give 6mls

depends on the horse really,doesnt touch my daughters pony at all no matter how much he gets. think if they are highly strung they just override it he appears sleepy in his stable after its kicked in then as soon as you try to do what you are doing he is back to his normal psychotic self!!

I take a class of my students to Darley stud every year and in their preparation area before you go into the covering barn is a long line of twitches hung up! Don't think you can call Sheikh Mohammed a pikey!!!

Yes it does work. Just give it the full 30 - 45 mins to take effect before doing anything.

Just used it on my stressy TB this morning for the farrier coming out to put a resin on his feet due to an injury, and he was a sleepy baby!!

didn't work with my mare for clipping.... she had the biggest does and still fought it... but has worked will with other horses i've known

theres nothing wrong with twitching horses i'd rather twitch than use sedatives

Sedalin will work. The trick is: ensure the horse is completely relaxed BEFORE you administer it and for the half an hour after it is given (until it starts to take effect.)

Adrenalin in the horse's system counteracts the drug in Sedalin (aka ACP) taking effect; So if the horse even suspects something is afoot before (or shortly after) the drug is administered the Sedalin's effect will be reduced or even prevented.

In a situation where a horse is already stressed over a situation, giving ACP or Sedalin Gel will produce minimal results. I think this is where Sedalin Gel is apt to get the reputation of not working particularly well for some.

In reply to JM07 twitching done correctly is NOT cruel. I use a humane twitch on my mare who does not like having her mane pulled. The pulling bit she is ok with it is the getting hold tickly bit she doesn't like. With the twitch on she goes very placid and lets me pull her mane without either of us getting stressed out. Did you not know that when the twitch is clamped on the nose it releases edorphines into the bloodstream which is natures natural tranquliser? Sedalin I will add even at a 2ml measure makes my mare drowsy for at least 8 hours. Surely 10 minutes with a twitch hanging off her nose is less cruel than sedating her??

Just a mention Sedalin can make some horses sweat up which is no good for clipping but the only way to know is to try it.

Sedalin can be very effective, but as said, you must administer it when the horse is in a calm, relaxed state as adrenaline just makes it metabolise much quicker.

Twitching is also incredibly useful, but if you aren't sure how to do it, ask someone to show you.

If your gelding is just a bit jumpy, could you try doing a week or so of desensitisation to see if he improves?

I clip mine with sedalin and twitch her to do her back legs/top of her neck. Makes it a much less stressful process for both of us.

I tried it yesterday for Ted to have his teeth done - he had 7mls, I cannot say it really worked for him, even though he was completely relaxed about having it and wasn't touched for 40 mins after the dosage was given.

QR - Sedalin was a god send for when I first turned Be out back home after her accident. I aimed to give her 5mls... but she bit into the tub, so may have had a touch more

she was left and very chilled for 45 mins after the dose, before we loaded her up, and when we got her home she just put her head down and mooched around her paddock, when trust me, normally she would have gone absolutely nuts!!!
