To work properly, Sedalin needs to be given to the horse when it is calm and fully relaxed. Otherwise the adrenalin in the horse's system counteracts its effect. Even a slightly suspicious horse, who only suspects some thing is going to happen can have enough adrenalin in its system to prevent the drug working. Often horses can sense imminent things, just from their owner's subconscious behaviour. Mine can, anyway!
