Sedalin Gel for travelling

Yes - I always use it, as neither of my horses travel well.

I gave a moderate dose to one of my horses, and a heavier dose to the other one who seems to be immune to moderate doses..

(i'm not competing by the way!)

I'd never use it on any of mine (and have a few nervous travellers who have improved with time/experience), but have transported a weanling colt for a friend which was fairly heavily sedated with sedalin before travel. All went well, but I felt sorry for the wee fella as he was unsteady from the dose, and then had to try and figure out the movement of the trailer too (this was his first ever go). Is this your horse's first ever trip in a trailer/box?
 
No hes travelled twice loose with a friend, but he is very raw with handling, hes the one its taken us 3 mths to gain trust and get a headcollar on, we are just starting to lead him around the paddock. He will be travelling alone and leaving his herd he has been with since a foal. He is a hw 15 hand cob who will be 2 end of May. Had a good chat with the vet and we are going to give him a really thick straw bed in the trailer, and as he is going to be so distressed leaving his family the thinking is it will all be a distant haze in the trailer, we are moving him 9 miles on backroads and will drive ridiculously slow. X
 
Just to inform you if your journey falls under the jurisdiction of the EC regulation on transport of animals.......

under fitness for transport:
'Sedatives shall not be used on animals to be transported unless strictly necessary to ensure the welfare of the animals
and shall only be used under veterinary supervision'

So as long as your vet knows what he is prescribing it for, it shouldn't be a problem...

Ah I see in your last post it would be under veterinary supervision anyway!!!
 
Is this the famous Freddie? If he's travelled before, I'd say let him get used to it without chemical enhancement. Bet you're more nervous than he is!

me ?? nervous???? never lol XX Had a long chat with the vet... umming and ahhhhing, and he felt sedation was the best route, and he is likely to panic without a companion too..... so think i will listen to the vet on this one, that way i won't get into any trouble if it goes wrong x
 
when i had my foal last year she was 11 months, 15.2, still on her mom and virtually no handling until the week before i collected her. we gave her no sedative and just persevered with her and i took us an hour to get her on the trailer, we tied her up and she travelled really well and ever since she has just walked on as good as gold. she had had very little contact with people and we managed it so if u have built up a trust with your horse why not try without and get him used to it? either way hope it all goes well :D

Thanks will bear that in mind!! We have 4 more weeks of leading etc.. trust coming very good!! XX
