My mare is a bit of a nightmare to clip and someone suggested using sedalin gel to sedate her and take the edge off, will this work? Also, where can i get some from?
My gelding - works great on him, knocks him out within about half an hour and can clip him all over, including head (he will let you clip body without, but hates head being clipped goes beserk! just stands there with sedalin)
My stallion - doesn't seem to work very well at all, no matter how much he has. It makes him a bit dopey, but he still reacts to clipper, stimulus etc.
I've seen it used on everything form racehorses to carthorses, and on the whole it works very well. Ask your vet for it - it doesn't have to be pescribed by the vet, but it is an 'over the counter' drug so can't just be got off the shelves.
It won't work if the horse is already agitated (ie raised heart rate) so you must give it before you get out the clippers and allow at least half an hour brfore starting as if they get agitated before it has had time to work it won't be effective. Don't expect to ride after clipping as the sedalin takes most of the rest of the day to wear off. Sometimes you have to give a lot more than it says on the packet, but the most important thing is to allow enough time between administering the sedative and starting the "scary" activity
My boy has 3ml of sedalin gel (3/10ths of tube) about 45-60mins before clipping it really works for him. I'm hoping to gradually reduce the amount he gets.
