Suppose this should be in the vet section but more people looking at this one! So sorry!

Anyway my horse is on box rest, he is getting more agitated, we are on week 4. Friday night he managed to kick a big section out of the back of his stable wall, wood, and has been squeeling and rearing.

Vet has given me Sedalin gel, and he can have up to 2 x 3ml doses per day. Can I put it in his feeds? Only asking as he is OK to administer it with the syringe (at the moment) but I am not at the yard in the morning due to work, so thought if I could put a dose in his breakfast it should help to chill him out especially while all the other horses get put out, but as I would be doing his breakfast the night before, left outside his door for the morning, does the drugs effect diminish?

How long does it usually last for? Prob like asking how long is a piece of string, he is a 16.1 cob. Does a bigger dose last longer or does it just initially dope them more but wear off in the same amount of time.
Obviously being Sunday I can't contact my vet!! So any help most appreciated!!
Thanks!!!!!!

I am not an expert but no one has replied to your post!! I'm not sure whether if you wet your feed it diminishes the dose but I have fed sedalin in a small amount of mix with no problems. There is a largish margin of error with the dosage so you can give a larger dose without worrying. I have been told that it takes 40 minutes to act, lasts about 4 hours and that giving a larger dose just lengthens the time it works for, not that it gives a stronger effect. Hopefully a vet might post to give you more accurate information!!

I know a couple of people that have given it in feed before with no problems. There was a really interesting article in H&H last week about it actually, might be worth a read, I think it said that a larger dose will last longer rather than having a stronger effect but it all depends on the horse and the state they are in when sedated.

Yes you can, we have to with the big girl as she is impossible to paste. Don't give him too much food with it as it stops it being as effective.

Went to local shop earlier they normally stock H&H but sold out so will have to wait till tomorrow, interested to read up on it though!

Thanks for help and advice! He only gets Hi-Fi and a few carrots in the morning and not a huge feed so hopefully it will be OK he is also getting ad lib hay so is munching most of the day anyway.
