Had my horse clipped today and has to be sedated as he is a nightmare unfortunately :( but the past two/three times now he shakes really bad on hindquarters and holds his back high. Is this a normal reaction when they're waking up or is this not normal? He had 3ml sedalin at 3ish and just got back from yard and under rugs he is warm apart from the area that is shaking. Is it worth asking the vet for a different type of sedation for next year when I clip?

Thanks :)

Hi,

It's very much worth talking to your vet about this - as soon as possible. My boy had a dreadful reaction to sedalin, and wrenched his SI joint as a result. It has taken months to get sorted and I'm still not riding more than 10 mins three times a week - starting now. His 'accident' - the sedalin did not kick in properly when supposed and he was having his back feet done (he had been belted by a farrier and would not let one near his back feet), so was pratting about with relaxed muscles and wrenched his back end - was on 22 October last year. The sedalin kicked in 2 hours later, and he stood for the next 6 hours like a giraffe at a watering hole and couldn't walk properly for the next 48 hours.

There are non ACP alternatives which last for only 30 minutes but I forget their name. There may be a repeated use issue - certainly with my boy this was the 4th time I had used it and his previous owners had used it a number of times.

Hope your horse comes round soon. I called the vet who suggested that when he got his head up off the floor I should walk him out a bit in hope that the fresh air would wake him up. The vet who came out the next day said that actually, if hit hard, don't move them. The drug relaxes muscles and ligaments and all it needs is a small stumble to result in a huge muscle or ligament tear.

Wow thankyou so much for replying - funnily enough he has had SI issues but from no known cause - but this could be it! Will see if there is any differences in his back end. Some people said this was just a normal reaction so wasn't too worried but wanted more opinions. Thankfully he won't have to be sedated till oct/nov again so will speak to vet about other types of sedation.

Poor boy he looks so unhappy and shakey! :(
