This may be a silly question, but is Sedalin safe for any horse..?

I know many people use it but I've never used it before. However, as my horse seems to get more nervous every time I clip him I thought that this year, I'd just get some Sedalin.

Having just called my vet to request some, the receptionist firstly told me I couldn't have any unless my horse had been seen within the last 6 months. I thought this was strange but I just replied that he had been seen for Vaccinations and she looked him up and said that it was 7 months ago so she would have to call and ask his permission as it was outside the 6 months...

Is this strange or what..?

She has since called back and said my vet has said that it's fine and they will put some in the post to me.

I'm a little confused and slightly worried about using it..!

ETA: Sorry if this isn't the correct place to post this question but i felt that people in here prob use and know about it...

It should be fine for any horse. A lot of vets are funny about supplying prescription only drugs without seeing the horse first.

Don't worry about it!

I would imagine it's just a jobsworth administrator doing their job.
Sedalin is pretty safe, it works in varying degrees on different horses though

Just a tip, make sure your horse is relaxed before you give it as once the heart rate goes up it doesn't work so well also has no effect on some horses in my experience!

Oh right...thanks all. I was planning on bringing him in early from the field, giving him the sedalin and then waiting an hour. So there should be no reason he would be worked up before it takes effect. Do any of you have any advice on how much to give him...although I presume it will say that on the tube..?

To supply a prescription only drug the horse has to be legally 'in the care' of the vet. 'In the care of' is usually defined as 'seen within the previous 6 months'. So to legally prescribe the drug your horse should have been seen within the previous 6 months. Obviously vets use their discretion at times as in your case but I think that this person was exactly correct in their actions!

hi, i clipped mine 2 weeks ago & used 5mg of sedalin. it only takes about 20mins to kick in , but make sure you don't give them any food as its takes longer to work then. good luck ! it worked really well on my boy.

I didn't say their actions were incorrect - last bit of their sentance = doing their job (okay so jobsworth might have been a bit derogatory

No I know you didn't, was just setting out the reasoning! And I know one or two who might fit the 'jobsworth' description.....
